My DNA Sequence Analysis

When analyzing my DNA sequence I did not yield as much of a high quality sequences as others this may have been due to the fact of poor pipetting into the well or kit manufacturing issues. In order to find the changes that occurred in our DNA our reverse edited sequence was placed into James Licks mtHAP engine found at http://dna.jameslick.com/mthap/. Another search engine found on http://www.mitomap.org/foswiki/bin/view/MITOMASTER/WebHome was used to verify if the previous engine was correct, which it was. These changes on both search engines showed point mutations at T16209C C16223T C16292T T16311C base pairs. The specific changes in my DNA loci made it feasible to identify my best-fit haplogroup, which was L3f1b (C16292T). This was determined …show more content…
This haplogroup is most common in East Africa and had risen between 84,000-104,000 YBP. This haplogroup is a direct descendent from mtEVE herself. L3 is also the haplogroup from which the macro-haplogroups M and N are believed to have risen (Soares 2012). When comparing this to my family heritage it makes perfect sense. Although my mother was adopted and has little knowledge of what her family background, one big detail hints that these results are correct. My mother at a young age was adopted from Lebanon a country found within the Middle East and brought to the United States. This would make sense that she is the haplogroup L3 because it is believed that there is a distribution of this haplogroup within Africa as well as the Arabian Peninsula, exactly where my mother was born. Figure 4 shows the pedigree diagram of the maternal side of my family. My mother is found at II #2 and she is able to pass it down the DNA to all her children aka my sister, brother and I. My grandmother, which is I #2 gave it to all her children so individuals II 2, 3 and 5. My aunt found at II 3 will pass it down to my two cousins found at III 4 and 5. Out of everyone in my intermediate family only my sister found at III 1 and my cousin found at III 5 are the only two who can further pass down the same mtDNA as myself.
