My Culture And Growing Up In The US

Decent Essays
My culture is described as a collectivist culture. This means that we care about other people’s needs instead of just thinking about our own needs. We strongly value having a strong relationship with family members and other individuals. I can see this be evident when one of our family members needs assistance such as health, finances, and other types of support, we can always count on each other. On the other hand, growing up in the U.S. this country is considered an individualistic society. This has not made a great impact on me because I value helping others in need.

Defining what American culture is today can be somewhat difficult in today’s society. American culture is always fluctuating. The United States has traditionally been referred to as a "melting pot," welcoming people from many different countries, and hoping to find a better means of life. However, others refer it to as a “Salad”; the ingredients are there, but not everything mixes well. America is full of rich culture, but not every person living in America understands cultures besides their own.…

Growing up with American culture is “different” from how my family members grew up with Filipino culture. I see myself as differently from my family members because of my likes and dislikes in entertainment, food, language, and styles. I feel like I lack the ethnic cultures that were passed down from my grandparent to my parents. I’m expected to have a lot of ethnic cultures from my parents. I feel different from my ethnicity because my likes and dislikes makes me seem different.…

Though it may be the simplest question in the world for others, being asked where I’m from is an inquiry I’ve always found hard to answer. At least if I was asked where I was born, I could say Kathmandu, Nepal. Having grown up as an American citizen in Asia, I have never been able to answer the dreaded “where are you from?” Though many people equate a life overseas to wealth, my parents moved to Asia under idealistic obligation, not business opportunity. We lived on the stipend of a volunteer, not the salary of a contract employee.…

Coming from an Indian background but growing up in America, I had the advantage of gaining knowledge about two very different societies. Where doing a certain thing might be right in American culture but doing that same thing in India might be considered a taboo. Every part of the world has its own rituals and doings. Since everyone has their own different perceptive towards looking at things no one should judge them without knowing why they do what they do. Growing up, a lot of happenings changed my thinking and how I view the world now.…

Collectivistic cultures focus on group goals rather than individual goals. They have roles within the community that would benefit everyone as a whole instead of themselves. Collectivists adhere to group norms. Individualism, however, focus on being unique and working for personal goas rather than group goals (Neulip, 51). In high-context communities, people can communicate without even speaking.…

As Americans we have different values compared to other cultures. “Yesterday”, a song written by Atmosphere reflects on American values intended to an audience of the younger American generation in hopes to inspire them to appreciate informality, honesty, optimism, self-help, time, and change. The values represented in this song may be offensive to other cultures as they typically value formality, indirectness, past orientation, birthright inheritance, human interaction, and tradition. The meaning of this song is to teach that communication is important to bond relationships because nothing lasts forever, so cherish what you have now because tomorrow is never promised. This song had taught me many values to live by.…
