I have been fortunate enough to travel across the world from a young age. Traveling has exposed me to various places and cultures as well as experiences that would have never been possible had I been raised differently. Both my parents are Polish and moved to America as young adults. They came here without prior knowledge of the language or social environment; however, their goals were accomplished through perseverance and dedication. I have approached my schooling career and life in general with a similar attitude. My culturally diverse background has influenced my perspective on life and the lives of others; it is part of my identity and has helped me sustain an optimistic view on various cultures and experiences.

I have traveled to Europe every year from a young age and find myself very fortunate. My traveling has introduced me to new cultures and diverse backgrounds that I would never be able to experience in America. This previous year, I had the opportunity of traveling to four different European countries: Poland, Lithuania, Germany, and France. Each location varied greatly between the landscape and social atmosphere; it was an incredible experience to be introduced to so many areas. Being from a diverse environment is considered to be a valuable characteristic where one can acknowledge and accept the differences in others. This person whom had experience diversity is capable of being tolerant and open with others while one maintains their own opinion firmly. Therefore many different people are able to respect and look up to those who came from a diverse environment, or that is what people say. In an era that is permeated by globalization and the overwhelming interconnectedness amongst individuals, particularly those in Western society, there remains the crucial and unique unit from which each of us originates, develops from, and ultimately belongs to: one’s family. It is from one’s family unit that a person is conditioned to learn a range of information and knowledge that helps to appropriate them into becoming (or not) functioning members of society as well as their own persons. Of this gleaned knowledge, perhaps most significant is the accruement of who we are as individuals and the beginning formation of our identities at their most basic level. As stated by McGoldrick, Carter, and Preto (2011) “the meaning of family is deeply intertwined with a sense of “home,” or belonging, and is essential to our sense of individual and social identity” (p. 5). In this sense, the phrase “I am” can be understood as being directly linked to that of one’s family of origin.…
