My Cultural Identity: Jehovah's Witnesses

Improved Essays
When anyone asks me what my culture identity is, the first thing to pop into my head is everything I am surrounded by and the closest people to me, also the activities I do on the daily and how it is done. Culture is something that is shared and learned as you grow up. What you learned is partially who you end up being in the future whether you can identify it or not. I define my culture identity as the things I am closest to and who I am closest to, which happens to be Jehovah God, his word the bible, and my family and closest friends.

Being in school plays a huge role in my life and it is where I find the most diversity of people. Because the majority of teenagers are not religious, they do not understand how one could possibly spend all of their time being spiritual and doing the things of God, so right away I am considered out of place or weird among the kids at school. In between my group of friends,,there are constant misunderstandings because I won't do the activities they do, due to my religious beliefs. Race, is another huge argument in school. Even though nobody claims to be racist, there is somehow always racist jokes being juggled around the school on a daily basis. Trying to be an unbiased person, I don't usually get tied up in the racist jokes. That is until my closest friends begin to make racist jokes to me, that is where the line is drawn. Race is a big part of culture that should not be seen as a negative quality, so because I don't tolerate racism I have had many arguments in my life about it. Even when people claim the jokes to not be taken serious, they dig up criticism and conflict without being noticed. But even then, no part of culture should have to cause big misunderstandings if everyone had at least minimal knowledge on different cultures and respect for every ones

My life before my conversion consisted mainly of growing up in a Southern Baptist Church. Throughout my life I have heard the gospel countless times, but never accepted it as absolute truth to follow. Instead, my life until college was characterized by performing a lot of religious activity such as youth groups, church camps, and going to church on Sundays. I was in a tireless attempt to live out a religion that proved I was good enough to be declared righteous before God. It was a restless attempt to be whatever everyone else want me to be.…

With myself being an agnostic person, it was acceptable for me to learn about a type of people who are strong followers of their religion. My family earned a living in agriculture; therefore, hard work was an important value for me from a young age.
