My Cultural Diversity Sample

Hi, I'm Moria (pronounced Mo-ri-ah, like Mariah Carey, or like "They Call the Wind Mariah" from Paint Your Wagon Red. Pick your genre.)

This is my Cultural Diversity Blog for my cultural diversity health course at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

A couple of things about me:
I'm Irish. Very Irish. I did Irish dancing for 9 years & my 5-year-old is in her 2nd year of Irish dance. I started dancing again with her this past fall. We'll be walking in Milwaukee's St. Patrick's Day Parade & dancing around Milwaukee for the holiday.

I earned my BA in Dance from UWM in 2010. Types of dance I did- Irish, West African, jazz, ballet, Horton Modern, & Musical Theatre. An injury caused me to stop dancing. Then my husband (married since 07') & I had a child, so I'm just getting back into it. But I still consider myself a dancer.

I'm interested in nutrition for athletes (pre-teen & adolescent dancers specifically), nutrition for disease prevention & management in adults, food security & nutrition for Milwaukee community members who live in poverty, ending food desserts, & increasing access to affordable healthy foods for all.

My goal is to become a Registered Dietitian. So I'll spread a year at UW-Green Bay next fall because they have that program. Then I'll have a year of clinical (which only ⅓ of the year is in a hospital setting, the rest is split between a community & research or food service setting). Then I'll continue on for my Master's in Nutrition. I'm hoping UW-Milwaukee could have that program in a couple of years. But we'll see.

I'm a big supporter of public education & higher education. I love Milwaukee & I love UWM.

I think this blog thing will be interesting. You might too. We'll see. Also, brevity isn't my strong suit. I got the "gift of gab" or Blarney. I write the way I think & speak, very casual & with run-on sentences.

That's all I got. Happy Monday

I was dancing at Huntington School of Dance, but apparently it wasn’t good dancing. Any ways, my last year at Huntington School of Dance was my first year of competition team. I still wanted to compete so we went just around the corner from my old dance studio, to Bridget's Dance Academy. We missed the placement prep, so they threw me on the team with my age group on it. I remember my first teacher being Mrs. Katie.…

Ruth Macklin believes that the cultural diversity we have in America creates problems for both physicians and patients. I consider the abundance of cultural diversity to be a challenge, and the physicians and patients need to both learn to clearly communicate their stances and reach a solution. As physicians, it is their duty to listen to the patient and demonstrate sensitivity to their situation, a different background should not step in the way of that. There are many cases of multiculturism being present in healthcare that have solutions. I will be discussing how Voodoo, Judaism, Female Genital Mutilation and the Santeria’s practices with mercury are all apart of multiculturism, the difficulties they pose in today’s society, and Ruth Macklin’s perspective on how we can go about handling these challenges.…

We all look different, but at a certain extent we are all the same. The citizens of America all have different DNA, which makes us special in our own way. I chose the movie, “Twelve Years a Slave.” This was the first movie to be directed, produced, and written by African Americans to win an academy award. This is a movie that has won 235 awards worldwide, and was also a winner of the Oscar award for the best motion picture prize. As people look at others around them and guess what cultural background they come from without knowing, in most cases, they are either slightly off or on the opposite end of the spectrum. Most everyone has been guilty by their assumptions of race or ethnicity at some point. When interviewing John Killingbeck, a twenty-year-old student at SIUe, I learned that he has background that surprised and interested me immediately. I recently met John and was aware that he was Latino, but I did not know enough of his unique cultural background. He was born and raised a United States citizen.…

With little diversity and culture represented in my Massachusetts home; it was a bit of a culture shock arriving in New York City. Here; different cultures are represented, various opinions are presented, and social norms are rejected. With this refreshing outlook on life, I believe it is necessary to get outside of your comfort zone and become aware of your surroundings. Back in my home town of Marshfield, I felt completely closed off to the rest of the world.…
