My Cultural Background

I was born in the Chicago land area, living here my whole life just like my parents. My mother and father were both born in Chicago, however, they both have different backgrounds which impact me. It all starts with my grandmother, she came from Greece to America with her husband. Eventually my mother and uncle were born, making them the first generation in her family to be born here. My mother has a strong cultural background, eventually passing it to me taking on religion and the whole culture in general. Now, on my father’s side, both his parents’ family have been in America for as long as they can remember. This is interesting, I remember learning about the melting pot theory in high school, and now knowing some of my ancestors were around …show more content…
I was always up to something to satisfy my curiosity, whether it meant to disassemble something, or not I was going to figure it out. Always being curious made it easier to learn in school, because I wanted to know the answer it made learning fun. My mother and father always made sure I tried my hardest in school giving me support along the way ensuring I have the best possible education. I am immersed with the Greek culture, from my mother’s side. I am involved spiritually and physically with the culture. I am an active member of my church and am involved with many activities. It is not just church I am involved in, it is the whole life and concept, the mentality of the culture. All that has rubbed off on me from my mother and grandmother keeping up the traditions. The whole culture has shaped me in a way which not many kids can relate to. I am glad I come from a family who takes pride in their culture, over all making life enjoyable with all the …show more content…
It might have been the physical aspect of them that tempted me to play them, I like to think fast which many sports require. Along with thinking fast, I like to be hands on, also found in sports. As good as I am at sports I enjoy problem solving too, if something breaks or is not working properly I love to problem solve. Thinking fast, being hands on, and problem solving I find to be enjoyable, however, this does not mean I like to construct things, even though that is somewhat pleasant. If anything is related to my skills, I love to do it, including a challenge math problem, just trying to figure it out intrigues me.

Hopefully I continue down the path I am on, and eventually receiving a degree in computer science. I love all the aspects of programing, the challenge (problem solving), and having to actually implement a program (hands on) that works properly, occasionally in a timely matter. Becoming an employee for a prestigious company such as Google or Apple would be an amazing accomplishment, however, their standards are very high and completion is tough. If I am unable to secure a job at one of those companies, I am sure there are many other opportunities, possibly better ones available I would be gladly to

I grew up in an upper-middle class, white, Catholic family, in the middle of suburban Cary, North Carolina. Culture was a term introduced in school with pictures of exotic places and bright wardrobes; history lived inside textbooks with stories of war and migration. My fourth grade family history project contained one piece of information: my great-grandmother sailed to the States from Italy in 1904. The little history and culture introduced by my family showed me who I do not want to become. While the teachings of Christianity shaped me into a compassionate, open-hearted person, I struggle to accept the dogma that followed it.…

The United States of America is sometimes referred to as a melting pot of cultures; though America does house a wide range of cultures, ethnicities and religions these things do not quite melt together as the saying implies. Culture is a concept that is exhibited by a group of people with similar values and includes thoughts, actions and beliefs among many other things. A person’s culture is learned as they grow. This process is not limited to childhood; culture can be learned at any time such as when moving to a different region, joining the workforce or any other social group. The very nature of who a person is is continually being formed by their culture.…

Place with a Memory Just like everyone in the United States of America, excluding Native Americans, I’m an immigrant and/or come from immigrant descendants. This means everyone has a race or ethnic group from which they descend from, and they may or may not follow the cultural aspects of their kin. For me, I am an immigrant who moved to the United States from Pakistan at the age of two (2002), so while my parents grew up with a great deal of culture and tradition, I did not; I only have what they attempted to affix on me. Being a first-generation immigrant, I grew up with all of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents directly on the opposite side of the world from me, so to me my real family was only between me, my mom, my dad, and…

Over the context of this paper, I will observe and implement my own culture through a magnifying glass to get a perspective of an outsider, and I will compare an aspect of another culture from an insider’s perspective in order to become more aware with the motivations behind the practice. Specifically, I will discuss the condition of higher education in America, contrasted with the practice of polygyny among African families to show how Sub-Saharan Africans view as “normal” in a larger context, and while revealing what may appear different and oppressive to and outsider, although it seems to be a complex practice to an insider than an outsider would realize. When I initially read the prompt for this reflection, I thought that it would be the easiest assignment of the semester. However, once I began thinking about what I could do to make myself happy, I realized this assignment was going to be more difficult than I had imagined. I spent a significant amount of time trying to think about what I could do to make myself happy. I pondered going to the mall to go buy something for myself, or going to get some delicious sushi from a nice restaurant, but I just could not settle on something that would really make me happy. Ultimately, I decided to stay home and play my ukulele and my piano in my room for an afternoon.…
