My Contribution To The FGCU Community

Improved Essays
The qualities that I possess that would enable me to contribute to the FGCU community are compassion, leadership and commitment to excellence. Having compassion means being aware of the feelings and needs of those who are around you. It's the little things we do in life that can make a big difference in someone else's. Whether it’s helping a fellow student with homework or recognizing when a friend is having a bad day and giving him or her a shoulder to cry on – it’s these small gestures that can make all the difference to someone.
Leadership is another quality that I possess. To me, being a leader means carving your own path in life and not necessarily following others. It means understanding the difference between right and wrong and knowing actions have consequence. Leadership means having to make tough decisions at times and influencing others to make good choices as well. Sometimes it is very easy for someone to get caught up in a moment and to follow the crowd, and it takes a strong leader to resist those temptations and influence others to do the same.

I practice this in all aspects of my life, whether it is school, family, work or athletics. There have been times where I have wanted to drop a class or quit an activity but my parents have engrained in me that you always finish what you start and give 100% effort. As I learned early on in life, it is always best do something right the first time. College is a serious commitment and I believe that FGCU holds a strong commitment to the success of their students. If I am admitted to FGCU I look forward to applying myself and demonstrating the qualities that have shaped me into the person I am

A great leader has to have one main attribute and that is character because character covers all the aspects of a leader. An individual’s character is based on a set of behavior traits that define the inner-self of a person. One popular leadership model is being a servant, which is very important in my opinion because in our society today many people have a selfish mentality. One of Belhaven quotes that I learn is “to serve and not to be serve”, which is very important to do as a Christian. I think that if you not making somebody else life better than you are wasting your time in life.…

The definition of a leader is defined by Merriam Webster as “a person who leads.” A simple and an objective phrase which carries little meaning to what leadership means. Another article written by Susan Ward in ‘The Balance’ defines leadership a step further as “the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal.” Both definitions capture the overall essence of being in control or in command. Yet from my experience in leadership roles, I have come to understand that leadership is not just about motivating someone to follow your objective.…

To successfully fill a leadership role, one must not want to simply control people, nor should one yearn for power, rather they should feel a necessity to guide people and coach them thoroughly. To be a leader is not the equivalence to a boss, the qualities and characteristics differ immensely. Exhibiting leadership must involve the ability to effectively communicate, display perseverance, and, among many other things, show a genuine enthusiasm. Communication is vital to any situation, but to effectively communicate is even more so in a position of leadership. There are ways to present words to whomever it may concern and ways not to do so; as this can affect people’s perception of not only you, but what you stand for.…

Personally, I think Leadership is the ability for an individual(s) to inspire others to believe that they are able to do anything even when the goal looks unattainable. They have the ability to motivate, influence, and set a culture that is uplifting and breaks down barriers between leadership levels. It is not something that can be taught in a class, PowerPoint, or book. It is based on experience throughout a career or a combination of careers. Leadership is everybody 's business because there must be accountability.…

Leadership in my terms is - ‘The ability of an individual to infuse a strong drive in other individuals in his sphere of influence to achieve a desired state and to inspire people even outside direct the sphere of influence’. To achieve this a leader must have certain traits, which vary from a leader to leader but are generally accepted as the precursors to leadership. These traits are both innate and cultivable by practice. To start enumerating the most important, I believe they are Clarity of thought, Concise and direct communication, Action oriented approach, Foresee the results and Empathy for others. Clarity of Thought: A leader has to have clarity of his thoughts, a clear set end goal – a vision, a need for achieving that end goal- a mission and a way to achieve that…
