My Contribution To The Boy Scouts Of America

Decent Essays
I directly contributed to the Boy Scouts of America making national and international headlines deciding girls can participate in Boy Scout troops and achieve their highest rank, Eagle Scout, and the Palm Order.

Spring of 2017 I had completed my Eagle Scout requirements. Firmly believing in the Boy Scout programs for what it has and does for young men, I reflected on why is it that only men have been able to reap its’ programs’ awards.

Realizing the Boy Scouts continued success depends upon its inclusiveness and changing with the times, when I heard of Sydney Ireland’s advocacy work and desire to advance with her cub scout troops’ boys, I decided to collaborate with her to make her effort public.

Boy Scouts of America v. Dale is a Supreme Court case that occurred in 2000. The question of the case was whether or not the application of New Jersey’s public accommodations law violated the Boy Scouts’ First Amendment right of expressive association to bar homosexuals from serving as troop leaders. Prior to the case, James Dale was the assistant scoutmaster of Troop 73. He had been an Eagle Scout, and after reaching the age limit at which he could be a member of the Boy Scouts, joined the adult division as an assistant. Around the time he joined the adults in Boy Scouts, he also left home to attend Rutgers University.…

To whom it may concern, April 9th, 2018 I, Patrick Coleman, am writing this out my own free will and On my Honor, as a scout, I am writing this truthfully and to the best of my knowledge. Last week, during our scout meeting, we played a 20 minute game of manhunt. While we were playing, I witnessed Tristan Stoltz fall. Afterwards, he had accused Steven of pushing him. Now, while seeing Tristan fall, there was no evidence of Steven pushing him.…

If George Washington and Robert E. Lee were young men today, they would be Boy Scouts and enthusiastic supporters of Scouting, as I am. In fact, in his Sept. 1796 letter to Alexander Hamilton, George Washington himself promoted youth assemblies and behavior strikingly similar to Boy Scout camporees that would take place 125 years in the future: “…but that which would render it of the highest importance, in my opinion, is that at the juvenile period of life, when friendships are formed and habits established that stick by one, young men from different parts of the United States would be assembled together, and would by degrees discover that there was not that cause for those jealousies and prejudices which one part of the Union had imbibed against another.” In my literature class recently, we were discussing how a nation moves from savagery to civilization.…

After a three-hour bus ride, surrounded by strangers, I arrived at Camp Pendleton. With no expectations, I assumed Devil Pups would be just another leadership camp. As I stepped off the bus immediately trapped by three drill instructors screaming in my face, I knew I had made a grave mistake. From the moment I stepped foot on Camp Pendleton, I knew my life would never be the same. Devil Pups was initiated due to a group of teenagers who in the 1950's burned down the American flag.…

The Order of the Arrow, is the honor society of Boy Scouts. Scouts, who are selected, have demonstrated that they follow the scout law and the scout oath in their daily lifestyle as well as being significant leaders in their troop. The Order of the Arrow, was founded in 1915 by Dr. E. Urner Goodman, who was a Scoutmaster and The Director of the Philadelphia Scout Council’s summer camp, which was perched on Treasure Island located in the Delaware River. The Assistant Camp Director Carroll A. Edson helped him research the language and customs of the Delaware Indians. The Order of the Arrow was later declared an official program in 1922 and in 1934, it became an official Boy Scout program.…

When sitting down to decide what my Eagle Scout Project would encompass I never thought that the choice would result in such an impact into the future. My project benefitted the Guide Dogs of Texas Organization, and through teamwork and dedication produced several light and portable PVC puppy agility training equipment (i.e, weave poles, agility ladder, and teeter-totter) and wood cabinet laundry/bedding storage. As minor as theses items may seem, these objects will continue to work to improve the lives of those who aren’t able to fully experience life; That, in essence, my Eagle Project will bring light into the worlds of those kept in the dark; To me that truly is a rewarding experience. Continuing on with the topic of service to others,…

Fox News had written an article about this situation titled “Eagle Scout: RIP Boy Scouts of America. You were great for 100 years.” Already by the title, Fox News got the timing wrong since when Boy Scouts was created. Boy Scouts was created in January 24,1908 making it 108 years old to this day, not 100. The article however, does have a similar contrast within the actual Boy Scout slogan which they quote “...growing boys into young men, and young men into leaders”(Patten 3).…

As a Boy Scout I know the many dangers of hiking and camping, I was taught the golden rule of camping and even the Boy Scouts of America’s motto is “Be Prepared.”. The meaning of this motto can mean a multitude of different terms, hence it’s name “Be Prepared”. However, there is a second and even more important rule of an adventurist, letting others know of your whereabouts and your estimated return time.…

My story begins at Onteora Scout Reservation in Upstate New York. The Boy Scouts of America have an honor society known as the Order of the Arrow, which is for Scouts who wish to dedicate themselves to an order that serves others more than that of the Boy Scouts. Scouts are selected through a troop-wide vote, and I was one of the few scouts selected to participate in the ordeal to join this order. The ordeal was a series of tests in order to confirm that we, the candidates, are fit to join this order. Before we began, however, we were required to take a series of 24-hour vows that included silence, fasting, service, and sleeping alone.…

From backpacking along the Appalachian Trail to white water rafting the former Olympic course, Scouting offers a myriad of opportunities. Without Scouting I probably would have never learned to tie knots blindfolded with one hand behind my back or cook cinnamon rolls in an open fire. Scouting taught me how to perform CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, and the teapot dance. Every year, hundreds of Scouts flock to summer camp to learn how to rescue drowning swimmers or how to build rope bridges. By engaging in Scouting’s wholesome activities, youth follow the Apostle Paul’s advice: “whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).…

Hello Mr. Green, I apologize for never responding to that email you sent last year, it must have gone through my spam filter as I do not remember seeing it. Unfortunately, Monday and Thursday nights do not work for me because of marching band practice. Tuesdays are also tough for me, but any meeting before 5:30 should be fine. If that works with the days you are planning with the den families, I look forward to being a Den chief again. I cannot tell you exactly what the Webelo scouts will experience due to the fact I joined boy scouting in year 2 of Webelos, however, I know that they will begin to learn the basic boy scout skills that will help them make the bridge from cub scouts to boy scouts.…
