My Composition Class

Improved Essays
This semester in my composition course, I believe I have become a more advanced writer. Throughout the semester my paper has had fewer errors and my organization as greatly improve. At the beginning of this course, my finals papers were just slightly revised versions of the first thought that popped up in my head. I did not spend nearly enough time reviewing or considering what my peer editors suggested. The papers I wrote earlier in the semester are full of grammar mistakes. I have learned the importance of revising my papers and checking for grammatical errors. When I spent ample time editing my papers, I was able to correct my faults. I believe my grades are a valuable example of how my hard work paid off.

My literacy essay was the first formal essay of the semester. This paper was about my Grandfather's tradition of singing in Italian to me. My thesis was not very compelling and quite juvenile. The paper is full of grammatical mistakes. There is an excess amount of missing commas. Comma placement was something I definitely struggled with. There are spelling mistakes and capitalization errors that I could have easily corrected if I had spent more time on revision. In this essay, my main strength was my detailed description and ability to convey the importance of the event.

In one month's time, my writing skills improved immensely. My grade ameliorated by 7%. I realize my paper still wasn’t perfect. I have yet to figure the secret to writing a perfect paper, but I don’t think many people have. In this paper, I failed to correctly introduce my quotes. My paper also had tense agreement issues. I was missing a few commas, but not nearly as many as in my literacy essay. In my paper, I used sophisticated vocabulary that enhanced my paper. Besides the fact that I had few transition words, the rest of my paper was well organized. The order of the paragraphs was logical and

That paper did end up being a bit choppy, though I did my best to make it not choppy, I added sentences in between each paragraph to try to make it flow. I tried to change my thesis to cover more ground so the reader would know what to expect and so they could follow along. That is one trait that I know about myself, though, I am a choppy writer. Making words and paragraphs flow isn’t my strong…

Throughout my educational career standardized testing has been a major part in determining whether or not you can proceed to the next grade or whether you have to take the class again. A Lot of kids that were my age when I had to take the STAAR test usually dreaded having to take a standardized test like the STAAR English II exam. I was no different, I was one of those kids who just wanted to get this test done with and move one. For a while this philosophy of mine worked, however that all would change when I ended up failing the English II STAAR test during my sophomore year of high school. Thus leading to a change in how I would view standardized testing and how my writing composition skills would eventually improve and affect my life.…

On May 20, 2016, my adviser and I sat down to have a discussion about the university required courses and courses that was mandatory for the Liberal Arts college. English 101 was one of the classes I chose to take my first semester because I knew I had more knowledge on writing efficient papers because of my previous AP English courses in high school. In high school, I was always told that I was an adequate writer because I knew the basic of connecting ideas that provided a clear concrete understanding. However, the only time I received an unsatisfactory score was when the information I included in my paper was unorganized. Also, another reason I chose to take English my first semester instead of my second semester was because I knew I needed…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

My writing skills throughout high school have progressively gotten better. During my freshman year, I hated writing papers, because my writing skills were pitiful. The more I wrote, throughout those four years, the better my papers became. From freshman year to now, I have improved my grammar, flow, and sentence structure. When I was a freshman it would take me hours to write a two-page paper, but now I know that I can write a lengthy paper and my grammar will stay sufficient throughout the entire essay.…

Survey Questions: Adjectives Creative- For an example from APULL, I try to avoid essays based off of clichés or other people’s ideas, instead creating essays by thinking about what I got out of the book and the parts that I personally believed were deserving of deeper analysis. Outside of school and writing, I use my creativity in my extracurriculars; I am an excellent French Horn player and have achieved the rank of Honor Thespian for my commitment and contributions to the theatre program here at Edina, bringing my love of dance and experience on the Hip Hop Dance Team to help choreograph many of the dance numbers seen this year in In The Heights. I also love drawing and crafting things out of paper and whatever other materials I have available,…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing.
