My Community Engagement Class

I have owned a total of four dogs and two cats in my short eighteen years of life. To say the least, I’ve always loved animals, specifically dogs. They’re fun loving, easily excitable creatures who bring out the best in all of us. Unfortunately, many of them are without families living in pounds and worst, some are living in abusive homes. After many years of weeping to Sarah McLachlan's singing, “ In the Arms of an Angel” and promising to help save the lives of the many dogs and cats without loving homes, I finally have the chance to actually help. For my community placement, I will be volunteering at Bobbi and the Strays. Although my community placement is not directly related to my major which is Biology, I am very excited to help better …show more content…
Because of these conversations I’ve realized, I am a lot more passionate about social activism than I previously believed. I’ve also learned to take that passion and use it to create a positive space even when disagreeing with someone's opinion. There have been many situations where I have been discussing very sensitive topics with people and have become upset over their opinions or lack of understanding. It is very easy to become aggressive or angry at people who state opinions that you do not agree with, however, learning how to remain calm is key to coming to an understanding. Being able to remain level headed during heated conversations or stressful situations will be especially helpful at Bobbi and the Strays because I am sure there will be many times that I will be faced with scary or off-putting task. If I remain level-headed I will be able to complete those task and learn new skills. Remaining calm during heated conversations in my Community Learning class will be important as well because there will be times that we will have conversations about sensitive topics and there will be people who have opinions that upset me. However, I will never grow as a person if I allow differing opinions to make me shut down or stop listening to others. I am hoping that my new found love for social activism and ability to remain calm even when under distress will help me in both my placement and Community Learning

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

During my excursion to the Animal Rescue League of Boston, I quickly realized many of the emotional connections that humans and their canine pets share. Prior to visiting with the dogs, I made my way around the cat shelter area. After observing the cats, it became evident that their many of their “cute” behaviors were aimed solely at attracting the attention of potential human companions. For instance, a white cat named Sirocco made a distinctive pawing motion whenever I passed her cage, as if she was beckoning me to come closer and visit with her. Yet, after she had garnered my awareness, the snow colored tabby simply retreated back onto to her cardboard bed to continue her restful afternoon.…

Civic engagement in college courses is gaining popularity among liberal arts colleges across the nation. With college courses’ reconstruction to take a civic-based approach to education, one must determine the content educators need to deliver and what will be permitted to be taught, first and foremost, for education to be successful in the production of effective and virtuous citizens. The content to which we instruct our students is at the center of many debates about implementing a civic-based approach to education. David L. Palmer argues that having a lesson plan to instruct students by “employing civic participation in college instruction enriches the practices of both education and democracy” .…

The purpose of America’s public education system is rooted in the need for the public to be able to read and write, but the goals of the current system are shrouded by the cover of standardized testing. The push for testing throughout the states has transformed the way that teachers and administrators try to address the academic needs of their students; by “teaching to the test,” teachers can justify their curricular decisions because they are aligned with the goals set by the state board of education. Standards guide the curricular decisions made by teachers because they are aligned with the content of these tests. The idea that standards help teachers assess the knowledge that students have gained over an academic year is valid, but in practice…
