My College Composition Class

I’ve never thought of myself as a strong writer before. For as long as I can remember I have always hated reading, English class, and writing. I realize my poor writing skills have come from my lack of reading throughout my childhood. However, now I enjoy writing a lot. Especially personal writing like I do in my journal. It can help me relieve my stress and ease my emotional pain. I always have a lot on my mind, considering I’m in nearly every activity Okoboji has to offer, and writing is almost like a way of venting. College Composition class has pushed me to write more since, without it, I probably wouldn’t be writing anything at all. And because of that, I’ve learned many things and most definitely grown as a writer.

From composition class last year it was easy to get away with starting off a paper with a quote, but now that is just way too clique in the majority of instances. I’ve learned many other ways to start my papers; for instance, now I start my paper off with a personal story, a cliffhanging statement, or even a statistical fact. Another thing I could get away with was my title. Before, if I would have been writing a story about world peace, I would’ve titled my paper as ‘World Peace’. That just sounds tacky and unprofessional to me now, however. The first thing people are going to read is the title, so why not make it the most eye-catching thing about the whole paper? I’m not going to lie, I’ve had many struggles finding good titles up until a couple months ago; it took me forever to finally learn how important titles are. Lastly, are the conclusions. The conclusions are supposed to wrap everything up and tie everything in, and I knew that before but not as much as I do now. At the beginning of this class, I would basically repeat my exact thesis into the conclusion and call it good. I want to go back and yell at myself, “It’s a reflection, not an exact replication!”. However, I don’t need to because I know it now.
The last thing I would like to briefly touch on is repetition. It took me the whole entire class semester to work on this and I believe I finally understand. After I write a paper, I now go through and check if I used the same words over and over again. Sometimes repetition is a good way of writing such as in a poem, but this is something I was not meaning to do. I’ve learned to go back and check over my word choices and change them up a little bit. It’s helped my writing tremendously and is a helpful tool I will take on with me

When I write I feel liberated, expressive, creative, and most of all I feel like myself when I write. I love being assigned an essay, or written response because it gives me the opportunity to portray my personality and ora through my words. In my 3 years at high school so far my easiest assignments have always been written; it just comes natural to me. Words can be as sharp as a knife, or as dull as a feather and I live for them.…

There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

I believe that I have the potential to be a good writer, as I wrote a seven-page research paper on the way children are becoming more intelligent with the use of the internet, as they have the ability to look up an answer to a question they do not know anytime of the day. I had an easy time writing the paper because we went over everything that needed to be in it beginning with an attention grabbing thesis and ending with a powerful conclusion. I flew through writing the paper, which made me confident that I was going to get a good grade (and I did), it made me feel that I had improved my writing abilities. I also had to write an analytical paper comparing Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to a modern day problem in society. It was more difficult to write compared to the research paper because I had to compare it to a difficult read.…

What writing means to me and why I prefer to shy away from it, until now. Being an Adult Learner, having been out of school for more than 30 years my weaknesses outweigh my strengths. My greatest weakness in writing, I would have to say is my spelling and use of grammar. I have recently been diagnosed with a slight learning disability which explains my problems with spelling and grammar. Having 4 children who I am very close too helps alleviate a huge portion of my inhibitions about writing, that combined with the newer technologies of programs like MS Word and other programs like it that have spell and grammar check help me in my daily writing needs.…

This jump to using different writing styles was certainly something that took more research outside of the class room and ultimately a revision of my rhetorical analysis essay, due to the vague explanations of the persuasive appeals. This was due to our rough draft days where given the opportunity to look at another person’s essay in the class allowed me to understand the structure and the message being presented. There was also a day in class where we were to present our argument for our research while the people you were partnered with would ask questions trying to stump the argument my partners or I would make. This proved useful because we were able to bounce ideas off one another allowed me as well as my partner to get another perspective on the topic as guidance to ultimately create a stronger…

I like to believe that when I write for mainly school I'm a good writer because I spend lots of time to actually figure out what I'm going to say, it's not easy to just have a topic and go off that. I feel as if I'm an average writer, someone who writes at least monthly but doesn't want to write everyday. One time when I was in the 5th grade we had a program called young author where you got to create a story and you had to put it in a book. You also had to color pictures in it. Basically a children's book…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
