My College Admissions Essay To Be Who I Am

Improved Essays
Born in Zadar, Croatia on April 30th, 2000. My parents decided that it would be better for not only me, but for my sister to come the United States of America so we have a chance at education. Coming to the states was something that changed my whole entire life, it gave me the chance to be who I am. Living in Croatia for 6 years, I was still young to know who I really was. Croatia at the time was a place of poverty, sexism and most of all, homophobia. It was scary knowing at the age of 13 that I was bisexual, it was a hard year for me. I couldn't come to believe that I liked men, especially my peers in school. My middle school guidance counselor and psychologist kept on telling me that it would be OK and that my parents would be fine with it …show more content…
I want to be judged for who I am, Johnnie Jordan Pera. A 17 year old bisexual student living in a world of new possibilities. I want to leave a mark on the world and I want to remembered as a person who even though has had a past that wasn't so great, has learned from his past and actions to become a man of his own intelligence and integrity. I've always preferred to be the lone wolf type of person as there is no one in this world who can want what I do. We are all different people and we need to be free and willing to change the world one leap at a time. As Buddha once said, “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.” These are the words that wake me up in the morning, the words that I follow. The past does not define me, today does not define me, the future and what I WILL do, defines me. 600 words cannot describe how my life is, it merely shows a glimpse of what I have to overcome on a daily basis. I will become my own person and I will not follow in someone else's path. I have to live with the truth, my parents are homophobic and they would never accept me for who I am. My grades are what I earned even if they are not

Successful academic and professional study requires more than to surround oneself with diversity, but instead to be engulfed in it. Perhaps the most effective way to understand a person’s diversity is to understand how the intersectionality of their identities has formed their current world view. I grew up with divorced parents below the poverty line. My mom spent years at a time in jail, rehabilitation clinics, and group homes, while my father has battled alcoholism long before I was born, so my grandmother raised me. Arguably a subculture itself, poverty has significantly altered my world view.…

Social works main goal is to assist individuals and groups of oppressed populations with resources and empowerment to improve daily living conditions. What It Means To Be Gay

As a child, I never really understood what it meant to be gay. I never understood the strict borders between pink and blue, between dolls and race cars, between pretty dresses and sports-related t-shirts. I never understood why these boundaries existed, and why I was on the “wrong” side of the wall. Nonetheless, I kept going, and I became who I am now, someone strong, both mentally and emotionally, and someone who loves himself and who is willing to help others love themselves too.…

Better Left Unsaid "C'mon Paige, you've gotta have a crush on somebody. " For a moment, an image flashed through my mind before I scolded myself, my face blushed crimson, my throat tightened, my palms became slick. I always dreaded this part of the middle school sleepovers I attended. Everybody's eyes were on me, as if trying to search out any secrets I might be hiding. Throughout my years as an underclassmen in high school, I struggled with my sexual identity, but always somehow managed to ignore it. During the beginning of my junior year, I realized I cannot continue to ignore something that has such a large presence in my life. Sexual orientation plays such a large role in somebody’s life as it depicts what kind of person you will spend the rest of your life with and where you go with them. During my eighth grade year, my teacher had asked all of my grade to write letters to ourselves and that we would receive these letters during the beginning of senior year. As I started senior year, I had received a letter in the mail from my eighth grade teacher.…

When I was an adolescent, I went through so many stressful things. It went from figuring out my sexual orientation, identity, and goals; while going through an emotional, physical, and psychological battle within. Growing up in New York City, played a huge role when it came to dealing with my self-identity and other adolescent issues because it’s rough living there. You see some much diversity going on but not enough acceptance with these communities that you encounter. For example; my friends and I were walking to school one day when this man said to me, “that the only thing that’s holding him back from assaulting my gay behind was that I would press charges on him for a hate crime and assault.”…

In my eyes, the environment that I came to be who I am was a lot different than everyone else who i grew up around. My dad owns a basketball company and because of this much of the things i do and participate in are affected by this. As I’ve grown older and because my dad is still developing his company, I have come to learn so much about responsibility. Growing up I have been expected to “ help out” with the company even though it is not always what I want to do. This is a constant struggle between me, my parents, doing what i want to do, doing what it is expected of me and going above and beyond, and not only that but having time to and motivation to do it all.…

When I first realized I was gay, it did not seem like a big difference. Some exciting stuff happened, like gay marriage becoming legal and meeting a group of friends who were also part of the lgbtq community. As time went on I trended towards music, art, literature, almost anything as long as I felt accepted or represented. I became more political as it became clear that more people than I could have imagined would like to take away my basic rights or the rights of those in my community. I could not understand how others were not keeping up in the realm of politics, why they were not as loud as me when it came to the same issues.…

When I was little, I was picked on because I was “different.” I didn’t know how or why I was different. As I got older it became clear that life isn’t like a fairytale – it doesn’t have happy endings and traveling to new places doesn’t make it better. I learned this when we moved from NC to Florida for my seventh grade year. Ever since then I have slowly been expressing my “gay” self.…

As a first-generation, American citizen in my family, I had to experience two vastly different cultures that would shape my life into what I am now. My father and mother were from Burma; a nation deeply enriched with its own culture with little to no influence from Western nations. They moved here in their twenties, so they experienced the American culture to an extent due to their occupations. However, I was immersed into the American culture from the start of elementary school to the end of middle school, as I was placed in a private school by the name of St. John’s Lutheran. As you can tell my school was highly religious, my homework would often consist of memorization of bible verses to explaining the acts of Jesus.…

I can remember it like it was just an hour ago, the time the plane landed in New York. It was a late afternoon and it was chilly. I remember immediately falling more in love with my mother because she had insisted vehemently that we wrap ourselves up in layers because she predicted that it would be cold. Even though these memories are so vivid, it feels like it was a thousand years ago. So much had happened since that first day in the United States three years ago.…
