Personal Narrative: The First Day Of Christmas

Dazzling multi-colored lights sparkled, laughter filled the room, and “Jingle Bells” played in the background, until the echoing sound of a phone resonated throughout the decorated house. Soon, the room fell still as the look on my mothers face went from joyful to distraught. Christmas, my absolute favorite holiday, always started the day after Thanksgiving when my mom pulled out the Christmas decorations. However, the first day of Christmas in 2009 did not bring holiday spirit, or comfort, or joy. It only brought pain. After a prolonged, difficult move to Hawaii on the Air Forces orders, we finally had a peaceful moment to enjoy the Christmas season; however, that immediately changed when my mother announced Grandpa, my grandpa who would read bedtime stories and build me a rope swing just to keep me entertained, diagnosed with Cancer. Instantaneously, my mother, three siblings, and I packed our bags with cold weather clothes and flew to sub-zero Montana, leaving my dad behind in …show more content…
Peacefulness sauntered throughout the house. I woke up thinking I would race down the stairs to discover my brightly lit, ten-foot cedar tree, with an array of presents and stockings; nonetheless, I took the short walk from my makeshift bed to the living room to find that tiny, tattered Christmas tree. Snow fell serenely, providing a charming backdrop for that little tree with the K-Mart gifts nuzzled up around it. I looked around at my blissful family; my grandfathers face, although weary from chemo, lit up with happiness. He called me to his lap, and as I snuggled up next to my grandpa, I felt content. As laughter and smiles filled the room, I looked at the twinkling, bowed Christmas tree once again and understood that I did not need a massive, fully ornamented Christmas tree with an copiousness amount of presents underneath. No, I unconditionally and wholeheartedly found myself satisfied with that tiny, tattered Christmas tree, and the comfort of my grandfathers
