In their book Paying for the party, Armstrong and Hamilton discusses how universities take class differences and class projects of distinct women to define what will be their college experience. In their book, Armstrong and Hamilton defines class projects as individual and class characteristics that defines a person’s agenda and orientation to school. Hence, people with similar class projects not only shared the same financial, cultural and social capital, but also the same expectations toward school. As a result, Armstrong and Hamilton claims that students with similar class projects end up becoming a collective constituency and a representative group for the university, whom in turn must take their interests to form a college pathway for…
It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…
In general, Hmong parents view their child with disabilities differently than their children without disabilities. Parents are sadden and disappointed when their child with disabilities cannot meet those expectations.…
As the child of an immigrant family, the immigration policies are of great importance to my family along with many other families. The immigration policies affect many legal and illegal immigrant families and their U.S. born children. The ever-changing laws pertaining to immigrants and how to handle them splits families apart and deports citizens acting fully within the law who have done nothing to deserve their unjust treatment. The laws regarding the deportation of immigrants are never fully clear and are constantly changing thus, leaving many immigrants lost and confused as to their situations not knowing if they are going to be removed from the country at any moment. An immigrant may apply for a residency renewal and find themselves in…

As I came to college, my family and I anticipated I would be following a simple mold of a conscientious student. One that is highly focused in some limited number of long term goals. But, I slowly realized my vision of success needed to have stories from different roads and bridges, than just one simple path.…
Growing up in a family with immigrant parents was not easy. Watching my parents freeze up every time a police officer pulled up next to them was anything but pleasurable. It was an anxiety felt by the whole family not just my parents. My parents, brother, and I endured many of these times throughout the years I’ve been growing up. Even though these were unfortunate moments, we all learned positive things from them.…

Transformation in American Born Chinese In the American Born Chinese, Gene Yang presents the theme of transformation and identity through the two foils, Jin Wang and Wei Chen Sun’s, shared symbolic transformer toys. During the introduction to Jin’s story arc, Yang punctuates an old Chinese parable on adaptation with depictions of a young Jin fiddling with a red transformer, immediately establishing the transformer as a symbol of change. Following that instance, Yang illustrates the early life of Jin and three other Chinese American boys where both the cartoons and action figures revolved around a central transformer motif, further emphasizing the unifying quality of the theme of transformation.…
The Chinese, Jews, and Irish immigrant were different by their culture and their physical features. The immigrants culture was frowned upon and looked exotic to Americans. All of them were discriminated for following a different religion, playing different gambling games, speaking a different language, wearing different clothes and styles, eating different foods, celebrating different holidays, etc.. One example from the Chinese immigrants that was unacceptable to the Americans and part of the Chinese culture was the queue, long hair worn in one braid down the back, worn by Chinese men. The hairstyle was considered a symbol of Chinese submission to the dynasty.…
