My Aunt Marcia was a very important figure in my life, so when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was devastated. During her eleven-year battle, I often visited her while she was receiving treatments. As a typical concerned family member and inquisitive child, I asked many questions of her medical care team: how the treatment worked, what test results meant, and many other questions. The medical providers were so kind to me, as they answered all of my questions and explained everything to me in terms that I could understand, which comforted me. Though I grew up in a small town, my community was focused on helping those less fortunate. The projects that I organized and participated in opened my eyes first to the poverty in my own community, then to those around the world who lack the security that I take for granted. Over the past four years, I have completed over 500 hours of community service, including working with the American Red Cross to coordinate blood drives, Mercy Meals of Southwest Nebraska to package nutritious meals for those affected by disaster, and the Dundy County Library to improve literacy skills in community youth.
