Essay On Double Major

Improved Essays
When it came time to decide what career path I was going to take after high school I didn’t really have that big of a decision. Ever since elementary school I’ve had an idea that I wanted to be a teacher, but the one part I did need to decide was what grade. Throughout the past 13 years of my schooling in the Davis County School District I had plenty of good teachers, and I had my fair share of bad teachers. Although since I’ve known I wanted to be a teacher for so long, almost every single one of those teachers had some sort of an impact on me, whether it was positive, or negative. Things such as, how my teachers taught, how they handled different situations, and the ways they interacted with the students have all been huge influences on …show more content…
Many people have asked me why I plan on finishing at Iowa State not UNI. Although I know UNI is a great school for education majors, it just isn’t the best school for me. I have recently decided to double major in elementary education and agriculture education. So, therefore I have to attend Iowa State because it’s the only school in Iowa for agriculture education. I know it is an abnormal double major, but it is a double major that fits me. From growing up on a farm in Southeast Iowa and being very actively involved in FFA throughout high school, agriculture isn’t something I want to put in my past. By being so involved in FFA, I have grown a passion for agriculture. So, by double majoring in elementary education, and agriculture education, I will be able to teach kids in two different aspects, that I love. My double major will allow me to either teach kids the importance of agriculture and all the different concepts and ideas that make agriculture a whole, or teach children basic concepts that prepare students for their years to come. Either way I am exciting to finish college and be able teach the two things I love most and hopefully make an impact on students lives like my teachers did for

For example, the idea of communicating with a professor through email or text messaging. Being formal and asking only questions is something that can make the relationship between student and teacher successful. Also I enjoyed learning about the behaviors of how not to act during class, and how to be an engaged learner and a good note takes. The idea of how to make people like you also stuck out to me, and made me think of how I can just simply listen to what others have to say and just smile and relate to what they are saying and this will make them feel more understood and welcomed as a friend. Lastly, the one topic that I thoroughly took to heart was the idea of preparing for a lecture before the lesson.…

In the article, “A New Deal for Teachers,“ by Mathew Miller, he argues that low income families with students from fourth grade through eighth grade show significantly lower tests scores compared to students from high income areas. This problem Miller addresses, is that there are not enough good teachers in poor cities, and not enough teachers willing to continue their jobs as teachers. Another argument Miller indicates is that having a good quality teacher makes a huge difference in the child’s education and overall development. Miller says that teachers, who do not care about their students and their performance, result in students doing poorly in class academics. One way to resolve these problems is to raise the wages for the teachers, but base salary upon performance and educational background.…

I chose to pursue a teaching career for middle school because I feel that children are at that age where they are interested in everything. They want to know more than what they learned when they were in elementary school and that makes me excited for them. I remember when I was younger when I first told my parents that I wanted to become a teacher because my seventh grade math teacher had the greatest influence on me, and I remember them telling me that becoming a teacher would be a mistake because they didn’t make much money. To this very day, I believe that if you want to become a teacher it’s because you have a big heart and you’re not in it for the income but for the outcome. Hard work and determination will allow me to pay for the things that I want in life, such as my dream house, and children, vacations, cars, and more…

Being a student at Queen’s University taught me that the opportunities we seek out teach us about our character and more importantly, about our passions in life; they help us to define our goals and will lead us to be successful. I have been fortunate to gain valuable experience as a Queen’s student, orphanage volunteer, and drop in center volunteer. My experiences shaped my understanding of teaching and learning processes as I learned the valuable qualities that are exhibited by successful educators that establish supportive learning environments for their students. While working in Romanian orphanages this past summer, I learned how each child presents their own challenges as they learn, and communicate differently. In a short time with a great deal of patience and dedication I learned enough of the language as I led games, bible studies, and helped children with conflict resolution.…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…

The Paramount Issues of High School What assets, features, and rules would the perfect high school have? In Leon Botstein’s article Let Teenagers Try Adulthood, Botstein calls out the issues of modern high school and claims that high school needs to be completely reinvented, offering many ideas as to how schools can better the education and experiences of their students such as having teenagers graduate at sixteen and ending harmful high school culture. Although Botstein makes some good points, the most important issues that need to be corrected to make American high schools more ideal are hiring more caring teachers, removing cliques and social class, and letting teenagers have more responsibility. Teachers are to schools what blood is to the body; schools cannot be schools without them.…

At twelve years old in seventh grade I had this teacher that inspired me to become a teacher and ever since then, becoming a teacher has been a priority.…
