My Social Work Career

Social work, this is a career I see myself enjoying the rest of my life. I find helping people intriguing and sets a goal for what I wanna do in my career. I have chosen this major because I have had firsthand experience with children in the foster care system. This got me intrigued as I was in high school searching for a major that I would to eventually incorporate into my career and lifestyle. Kansas State University was one of the schools I enjoyed visiting as I was visiting colleges and here I am a junior, applying for practicum. First, I will focus on myself and how I ended up here at Kansas State Polytechnic. Next, I will provide my insight on what a social worker is and what I see in my future. Finally, I will provide my experience in …show more content…
People are key in this career, social workers guide people that are in need and provide structure to people that willingly want help. Social workers are people that a dedicate their own lives to help others through difficult times. Also, Social work has many different branches such as addictions and substance abuse, child welfare, resources, counseling, gerontology, research, military and veterans, mental health, and medical. In class, I have determined that there are two types of social workers, direct services and clinical/licensed social workers. Individuals who face emotional stress, changes, and hard situations in life come to social workers for a guiding hand. As social workers, they provide the resources to the people in need and hope they use them to their fullest potential so they can get on the right track. When I entered the social work program here at Kansas State I was focused on helping children. I am now open to almost anything. I currently work at a pharmacy where we sell insulin syringes. I see people come in and buy them and definitely are not intending to use them for insulin. This gives me some insight on drug abuse and addictions and that someday I would want to help those people as well. Although, I really do want to help children. In my future, I can see myself as a school social …show more content…
In this class I learned a lot from Sarah and enjoyed it so much that I continued with the social work major. This class also had a special requirement for social work students, we had to serve twenty hours of volunteer service at an organization that involved social workers within their settings. Therefore, my volunteer hours were spent at the Cloud County Resource Center in Concordia, KS. When I attended Cloud County Community College for a semester I was involved in a work study with the resource center and fully enjoyed my time there. I found this an opportunity to go back and help Tina Stillwell and others out at the center. I spent my time cleaning the area for them for clients, handing out food in the food bank as well, and preparing the shelves in the food bank that had specific regulations. Another thing I did was go door to door to the low income apartments offering them white and wheat bread to people that really needed it. This is a great idea and is something that every community needs to incorporate into their community so people are not starving and only eating unhealthy foods because of such low incomes. The people I worked with at the Cloud County Resource Center were so kind and made me realize helping people who are in need is something that warms my heart. I went home each evening with great confidence that I achieved

To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…
