At a very young age I knew that helping other people was what I was destined to do. I dabbled in law and nursing but, never felt comfortable or as confident as I did when I finally explored social work. My skills of empathy, problem solving, and communication allow for me to aid and advocate for others.
I plan to attain my bachelor’s in social work, pass my licensing exam, and enlist in the Peace Corps. I think that not only are social workers needed here in the states but in other countries as well. Having been raised in a bilingual household has given me a head start on learning different languages such as Spanish and Quechua and thus this will help me converse with a larger population around the world.
I have always been interested in missionary work at home and abroad. I have volunteered at homeless shelters and was even able to travel to Kenya in 2010 with a local church. While I was there I distributed reading glasses to adults 18 and older by administering eye tests at a clinic in a church. I also helped build a community well so that residents would no longer have to walk miles to the closest river for drinking water.

During those two years a female who was in similar age to me touched me inappropriately. I had begged my parents not to take me to visit her but they thought I was just being stubborn. I was never told about sexual abuse until I was a lot older and once I had recalled what had happened I fell into a deep depression. Over the years I have been able to forgive this person for what they had done to me, but I still find it difficult to talk about.
