Nursing As A Career

Making decisions is an important part of maturing into an adult. Deciding on what I wanted to do with my life was just as difficult as it was important. Combining my aspiration to serve with my fascination with medical science, I recognized nursing to integrate my aspiration and fascination simultaneously. Aspiring to serve, I originally joined the Army as an Infantryman. One would not naturally think that an infantryman would have any fascination with medical science. This is not necessarily true, as an infantryman my primary objective was to destroy the enemy, my secondary objective however was to be a combat life saver. This meant that I had been trained how to quickly deal with mortal wounds quickly and efficiently on the battlefield. Being …show more content…
Wanting to interact directly with patients I knew that I would not find most technicians and assistants’ jobs acceptable because they do not get to handle patients directly. I knew I did not want to become a doctor because I did not want to spend eight to ten years of my life in school or have the risks and responsibilities that come with being a doctor. Trying to find the best combination of length of schooling, amount of responsibility and direct consultation with patients I decided to go into the field of nursing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics website describes nursing as, “Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.” Before I can just jump into the emergency room, I had to go to school to learn the skills and knowledge to be a …show more content…
The curriculum to become a nurse is based heavily on anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, neurophysiology, and pharmacology. That’s not even taking into account the many different patient care practicums. Even in high school I had fantastic grades in all my science classes, especially health science, anatomy and physiology and biology. In my free time at home, during my high school years, I would search online to learn how the human body worked, why it reacts to certain stimuli, about the many different types of diseases or injuries, treatment plans and pharmaceuticals. I am so interested in medical science because I want to know more about myself. If something on me breaks or malfunctions I want to know how to fix or treat

I also gained tremendous encouragement from this motto when I decided to pursue a nursing career in my forties. Nurses also may have to work longer shifts for other staff members that can’t make it in that day. “For we who nurse, our nursing is something which, unless we are making progress every year, every month, every week, we are going back.…
