Why I Want To Pursue A Master's Degree

From a young age, I thought of the library as a place of wonder and learning. Every chance I got during my early school years, I went to the library and checked out multiple books at a time. The head librarian inspired me to pursue reading and lifelong learning. Every week during the scheduled library time, she always had a theme planned and would often decorate the library to correspond. The most memorable weeks for me were the Greek Mythology week and the Halloween week. I will always remember the stories and books she read and the way library always appeared when came. That time in my life was what inspired me to continue reading and pursue personal learning. When I reached high school and was offered a chance to have a library class period, I quickly took advantage of it and learned what I could. During my undergraduate career I qualified for the work-study program at Tusculum College and quickly signed up for a library position, where I remained as a work-study until my graduation in 2012. Though out my time with them, I voiced my career plans of working in a library to the staff members and they encouraged me to pursue a Master’s Degree in …show more content…

They helped me through some stressful times, and helped me to better understand what was being taught in the specific courses I took. They were gracious enough to share their personal experiences in certain classes and provide some suggestions on what I might

U.S. Libraries in the 1960s The 1960s were a time of significant change for the United States, so much so this era is often referred to as “the rights revolution” (CrashCourse). The United States experienced the continuation of the Civil Rights Movement, the youngest elected president, John F. Kennedy—and the youngest president to die, the first manned moon landing, and seemingly everything in between. In a country that was so fraught with change, it only seems fitting that libraries were undergoing significant changes also.…

By utilizing a number of methodologies; informant, formal interviews, a focus group, observations and internet research a broader view of the subject was acquired as opposed to only investigating with one. Berg and Lune (2012) described this as “triangulation.” They stated “By combining several lines of sight, researchers obtain a better, more substantive picture of reality; a richer, more complete array of symbols and theoretical concepts; and a means of verifying many of these elements” (p.6). One could not have uncovered all this information with observations alone. McCurdy, Shandy & Spradley (2005) suggested to stay naïve during research.…

I had to make the tough choice of exploring the library near my home. When I got home from school I asked my mom to take me to the library to apply for a library card. She was really excited being that I hadn’t really uttered more than a few words to her every day, so she didn 't hesitate. Since this was my first time exploring the library I didn’t know what to expect to find there. Similar to the “Lost and Found” story by Lynda Barry my home was never filled with books.…

Interviewing these four helped me gain more knowledge and also gain different types of perspectives when learning about how certain students view the library. When you think of a library you think about how the library is quiet. You think of the typical librarian leaning their head over from around the corner with their finger smashed to their lips giving us the sign that we need to be quiet. This reminds us that the library is a place where people go to focus on their studies and not a place for students to “chill”. In reality the Siena Heights University library is nothing like that.…

My Motivation: What motivates me the most to pursue a college degree is that I will be the first person in my family to receive one. My grandmother is the backbone behind this motivation because she was always making sure that academics came first in my life. There was rarely a day that I would come home and she would not ask me questions about my homework, asking what I learned in school, or even looked over my homework. As I got older, she made sure I was a part of a college prep program called AVID from 6th-12th grade and that definitely made a difference for me. It helped me understand the importance of continuing your education and how beneficial it can be to succeeding in life.…

Libraries are important because they provide knowledge, awareness and literacy skills, they house free and vital resources you will not be able to find anywhere else, and they also provide their visitors with a study environment superior to their homes or coffee shops, in that they are nearly as distraction-free as possible. I think that sometimes we take libraries for granted, and that in this day and age of endless technological advances, we begin to replace a library’s role in our lives with Google for information, and with coffee shops as alternative “study” places from our homes. But the fact remains: libraries are irreplaceable in their own right, because, not only do they have alcoves and rooms of computers in which you can access Google, but they have millions of other resources that you will not be able to find anywhere else; because, in the nonstop hustle and bustle of the world today, the library is an exception to this phenomenon, with strict librarians who enforce utter silence in their library (insert smiley face here), and guarantee a peaceful study space. Indeed, entering into a library is almost like entering into another world, a world of peaceful quiet, invaluable knowledge and near-unlimited…
