Improved Essays
When I began English Composition One, I was a mediocre writer; however, this semester has unlocked my inner William Faulkner. I made a lot of careless mistakes in the form of writing, but that soon changed because my teacher really unlocked my potential and changed my confidence as a writer. I lacked organization, details, and consistency especially in my introductions. My introductions were stale and choppy, and if the subject was difficult, my introductions were vague. My writings were poor, but I have persevered and became an entirly different writer. My introductions started to contain consistency and order. I obtained a knack for parallel structure and being coherent or unified. My introductions became logical and smooth flowing. I was …show more content…

At the time of my first essay, I had no prior knowledge that in order to have an effective introduction; background information was needed about my subject. What did refutation of a common belief even mean? My wrongdoings were indescribable and utterly embarrassing; on the contrary, my improvement was indescribable and utterly intoxicating. I have corrected my mistakes in my introduction drastically since my first essay. I am now able to describe my subject precisely and give underlying details about my topic. I have now started to use vigorous verbs. (“Writing the Paragraphs in the First Draft”). My style of writing has changed entirely and I have gained confidence and pride in my work. I contained some of the topics necessary for having an effective introduction. I used parallel structure while keeping it coherent and unified. The introduction stayed consistently smooth flowing, and the essay’s introduction also remained logical. I stated all my points accordingly and emphatically. I was writing a work of art that touched me deep, and I was very proud of my work in my narrative essay’s introduction. My organization was solid and profound. I honestly believe that my introduction in my narrative essay was my best piece of art, and in the beginning of this class, I would not have been able to write that solid. In my narrative essay, I did not do anything for an ineffective introduction. I was able to overcome the obstacles of writing introductions, and be able to handle the pressure of introductions. My narrative essay was my confidence booster, and the introduction in my narrative essay took my beyond my past

In my rhetorical essay on, On Writing Well, by William Zinsser I tried my best write an essay to effectively show my reader in what I believed. In this essay I wrote how I thought William Zinsser was very effective in proving and demonstrating his points to his readers. I went into talking about how he involved some of his points through his own writing and as he did was very effective. As I wrote my essay, I included quotes and examples that Zinsser used through the book, to show prove of what I would state and why I stated it. Throughout my essay, I had many complications in trying to get my point across due to the fact that I had trouble understanding the concept of the essay myself.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. These two pieces forced me to see writing from a different angle. I could never write in the first person or with personal flare in high school. I was told that all of my essays needed to be clean and dry or my college professors will hate them. I was told that ‘I’ statements would result in points lost. I believe “Shitty First Drafts” and “On Keeping a Notebook” were great introduction pieces because they showed that college writing was not the boring, clean template I was told it was going to be.…

A writing experience that has stood out the most for me was when I was a sophomore in High School. There was a girl in my class who I wasn't so fond of who one day decided to announce to everyone that she had begun to write her own stories. She showed everyone pieces of her writings expecting to get nothing but compliments and be to deemed the class writer, but when she finally showed me her work I cringed at how deplorable it was. The stories had no clear perspective of whether it was written in first person or third person view, some of the simplest of words were spelled wrong, and many words were used in the wrong context. The class didn't seem to care for her stories so they just gave standard responses with no words for…
