Gabrielle Bernstein a motivational speaker once said, “Allow your passion to become your purpose, and it will one day become your profession.” My passion for many years has been to become a teacher. I never really knew exactly what I wanted to teach until I was a junior in high school. I was sitting in math class when my teacher asked some of my classmates what they wanted to do after high school. When one girl said she wanted to be an elementary teacher, my teacher went on a rant about how there is not enough math teachers and there is too many elementary teachers. Right then and there I knew I wanted to be a math teacher. I have chosen secondary education as my profession because I have always wanted to be a teacher, I have a passion for working with children, and I was influenced by other people in my life. First, ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to be a teacher. When a friend would come over, I would always want to play school and be the teacher. My creativity led to me using my stuffed animals as students while using copy paper as a pop quiz. I even went as far as creating a grade book on my computer to keep up with my students’ grades. Every opportunity I had to student teach, I took it. The whole time I was student teaching all I could think about is how I wanted to be a teacher. …show more content…

I have something that many people do not have and that is the patience to work with children of any age. Along with the patience, I understand that not everyone is the same and they do not learn the same. Therefore, it is important for me to be able to teach children of every learning styles. I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

My passion for art has followed me since I was five years old, when I was inspired by my kindergarten art teacher, who told us we could paint grapes whatever color we wanted. Being given that freedom made me feel ecstatic. That freedom I was able to have with art gave me a sense of purpose, even at a young age. However, when I moved to a different elementary school, the art teacher stripped us of that freedom. She was very cold and made people dread going to art class, including me.…

The first time I felt the spark of desire to teach was when I was ten years old, and my class had to give a presentation on what we wanted to be when we grew up. I remember my teacher asking me after my presentation why I wanted to be an educator, and I simply shrugged and said I had a feeling it was something I should do. There was no rhyme or reason to why I had felt this need, only a simple thought towards my future that most children have. This thought stayed in the back of my mind for years to come, and whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be, I gave the same answer, “I want to be a teacher.” The only questions that remained and continued to go unanswered for years were what grade would I teach and what subject?…

People often use the saying that ‘teaching is a calling.’ I disagree. Teaching is incredibly hard work, and I doubt that any teacher, that is highly effective, feels that they can just show up to class and whip up an engaging lesson. Teaching takes preparation, life-long learning, collaboration, a keen awareness of social justice, and an overwhelming amount of empathy. My experience prior to my higher education at Madonna University, and my enrichment through the teacher education program have better prepared me for the challenges of teaching.…
