Personal Narrative: My Love For Mathematics

Improved Essays
Ever since I was in the second grade I have had a love for math. I knew then that once I got older I would pursue a career associated with math. At that time, I wanted to be a math teacher because I did not have knowledge of many careers, but I loved math and was around teachers all the time. Math came so easy to me and I could do it so fast, and still can. When I got home from school I would act like a math teacher and teach my sister math, even though she is older than me. I had the same teacher to teach me math in second and fourth grade; I love her so much. It was my math teacher, Mrs. Patrice Worrells who inspired my love of math and determination, and her example and knowledge led me to want to pursue a career as an accountant. Mrs. Worrells made sure I knew all the basics of math because without the basics there is no way to understand the higher levels. She taught me to always be determined, how to get through tests, and how to stay positive. I have …show more content…
I had the privilege to take Math 1 in eighth grade as a credit for high school. In middle school I was always called a nerd because of my love for math, and just being considered smart. But, I think everyone can be smart if they put their mind to it. Mommy Worrells always taught me to never let a person or thing get in my way of anything I wanted to accomplish. Just do it! I would call her every time I got my report card and tell her how my semester went. I always made sure to make her proud! But, in 2011 when I was in the seventh grade, I came home with my progress reports and I was going to call her when I finished my homework. So I was doing my homework and my mother came in my room and said she had some bad news she had to tell me. My mother told me that my Mommy Worrells had passed away the day before. I was so sad and being to cry! Now, as of this day I still work hard to make her proud even though she is not here with me

The WDHS scholarship committee should select me as their nominee for these scholarships because as a driven student, I devote myself to successfully take advantage of the opportunities these scholarships will offer me. I am a well rounded student who goes above and beyond on everything I undertake, whether it be academics, athletics, extracurriculars, leadership, or service. While I am a high-achieving student, I prefer to be sought as a scholar-one for whom knowledge is about more than test scores and grades, and for whom learning is an appetite rather than a means to an end. To me, education is the key to success; therefore, my passion for education is connected with my desire to help others.…

I decided when I was in the 6th grade that I wanted to go into the teaching profession. While I do not remember the name of the teacher that inspired my decision, I remember her face and how much she made me enjoy Social Studies. I originally wanted to teach math, but 10th grade math changed my mind and I settled into the English curriculum. College showed me just how much my teachers had hidden the immense amount of work that goes into teaching and I had many panic attacks about the workload.…

Sitting in a hard plastic chair in my math class I felt paralyzed. The heat in the room was unimaginable on the cool autumn day. I could not be the only one that was feeling it. At the same time I could barely keep head straight as the math test stared back at me with harsh eyes telling me “you will never be able to pass this class,” in a slithering tone. A drop of sweat rolled down the side of my face.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

Math had always came easily to me. I was known as the math know-it-all because I would be finished with homework assignments before class was even over. Thus, in ninth grade, my Algebra I teacher told me that I should go into a honor level math class. My first honors level class was a breeze to me. We could hand in homework late, revise tests and quizzes, and had perfect notes given to us in class.…

I was assigned to work together with Lisa Adamson and Katie Doherty. My group and I were in charge to teach chapter eight sections four and five. Chapter eight section four was about functions, and chapter eight section five is about coordinate system. Surprisingly, our group previously taught a lesson of a fifth grade math class, and our sections tied into teaching up to the middle and high school level. I enjoyed these sections and I will discuss how I felt working as my group and how I individually performed.…

I almost had a heart attack when I received my math test with a big fat red F on top of it. It was the third F I've gotten alone in just math class. I was good in the other subjects such as, physical education, science, and reading. The only thing that I had trouble with was math, I hated math and I didn't understand a single thing that was happening when she taught a certain subject. I was going to have to do summer school if I didn’t get my grade up, and I already had my vacation planned out.…
