I now understand the importance of evaluation of research. I plan to become an advanced practice nurse that makes every effort to stay up-to-date on current events and the latest research. However, after completion of this course, I fully understand that more is required of a clinician than solely this awareness. One can be misled or use insignificant research if the clinician does not evaluate the research for its significance, usefulness, and quality of work.
For example, in my current role, I am frequently asked about the disease outbreak. It is part of my job as house supervisor to make sure there is enforcement of visitor restrictions during specific times of epidemic. Patients and families will frequently inquire about updates on disease and practices for prevention. Participation in research is crucial. “The collection, maintenance, analysis, and storage of health data are vital for planning effective public health action” (Macha & McDonough, 2012, p. 126).
