The Service Learning Experience

Improved Essays
For my service learning placement, I decided to volunteer my time with the Greater Ohio Virtual School and was able to tutor two students for about 18 hours and 30 minutes. The subject areas that I focused on with these students were Spanish and English. This service learning experience has altered my perspectives on identity and personal development and has taught me valuable lessons that I intend to remember for my career as a future educator. For instance, in relation to clarifying my future profession, service learning taught me that although teaching isn’t always easy, that it is worth it. To pursue this thought further, service learning confirmed my overall interest in teaching because it demonstrated that every successful and good …show more content…
In relation to how this experience has altered my views of the service learning process as a whole, I can confidently say that it has not altered my original opinion, but rather reaffirmed it. My original stance on service learning was that I believed it would be beneficial not only to the tutee but also to the tutor. By undergoing this process, I have learned not only more about myself as a future educator but was also able to bond and help two GOVS students. Each one possessed contrasting and varying personalities, but nonetheless, they confirmed my original idea that service learning was a great opportunity to engage in community work and learn. Although I cannot say that I have had a tremendous influence on the two young men that I tutored, I can say that it appeared as if once they started doing better on the subject that I was assisting them in, they grew in confidence and they became more eager to learn. Moreover, service learning taught me valuable insights about how the real world of teaching operated. Service learning allows those that are involved to get a hands-on teaching experience, but on a smaller scale. By limiting yourself to one or two students, the tutor is able to comprehend how much work goes into helping students and allows them to learn how to differentiate or make instructions and knowledge more accessible. By doing service learning, therefore, tutors learn how to assist student’s needs on a smaller scale, so that later when they have a broader network of students, they already have an idea how to help them and maximize their learning experience. However, despite this service learning experience, I did not feel a stronger connection with GOVS or the community. I believe that because I was isolated on a computer that I did not fully experience the community and school based bonding that normally ensues

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room…

For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). The statement is apparent when I was volunteering. The students of various ages were given the opportunity to enhance their skills.…

Doing this service learning project made me feel that I was back in high school. I decided to do this project for four main reasons: I didn't want to do the research paper, I wanted to return the help that I received from my ESL teacher when I was in PHS, I wanted to do something productive with the time that I had available between my classes, and lastly I needed some money. Overall, I wasn't expecting to see so much difference between the standard, and intensive class, but there was a huge difference among these two classes. My first day of doing service…

Service Learning is an act of portraying goodness, as described in the the article "What We Don't Talk About When We Don't Talk About Service Learning". Giving back to the community, is showing an act of kindness for others whom might clearly deserve it in a time of need or just as well as to those who merely expected it. Through these good actions, whatever the cause may be, a chain reaction could be started. Maybe not everyone shows their gratitude by giving back what they received, for example lending a helping hand, but one way or another they react upon this gesture in an appreciative manner. Having such young souls participate in wonderful causes such as shelter homes, hospitals, and schools to name a few locations is a wonderful…

This semester I completed my service learning component of the course at Iowa Legal Aid in Ottumwa, Iowa. While I was there, I had pretty easy and boring tasks, especially compared to Noah's experience while he was there as well. Things I did included stapling information packets, shredding and greeting the people who came into the office. Even though these were simple tasks, they were needed because since Iowa Legal Aid is not funded by the government, they get limited funds so they love any help a volunteer can give. By spending my time there did not really teach me a lot about different cultures than my own.…

Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. I did not expect to take part of what the community events, but I am glad I did because it has opened…
