Chisholm Dental Case Study

About five miles from my hometown there lies a small town called Chisholm. This city has no hospital and only one clinic. Within city limits, there lies a small school, an old grocery store and one dental office, Chisholm Dental. Run down buildings and “Out of Business” signs hang heavy on the street corners, which may explain why the average household income in Chisholm is less than 30,000. Poverty can be seen both on the front porches and the back alleys of this city. When given the instructions to volunteer for a community, I thought of no better place than Chisholm, Minnesota. As I scrolled through the small list of healthcare facilities in this town, I found an event that peaked my interest. To my delight I came to find that Chisholm Dental was hosting a community service on March 21st.
The goal of this day was to help the townspeople who had inadequate insurance, acquire the dental cares that they needed. Many members of the community

Actually, I was redeemed. How many days had it been since I counted my blessings? When was the last time I devoted an entire day to someone other than myself? Often people, privileged people, spend their time wanting more instead of being happy for all that they already have. I fit this description perfectly, that is until my experience at Chisholm Dental led me to a reversed direction of thought. As I walked out the doors after our last patient left, first I realized that I would undoubtedly be returning to volunteer at this event next year. The event was a complete success and many people were helped out tremendously. Then as I crossed the bridge between Hibbing and Chisholm I though back on all of the people I had just seen and assisted. Their greasy hair, dirty shoes and ripped jackets told stories of struggle and hardship. The pure bliss that came across them as they received care, forced me to come to terms with my ungrateful

“Changing the face of Poverty: Nonprofit and the Problem of Representation,” by Diana George, is about the misrepresentation of poverty shown through the mainstream media and films. The stereotypical images shown in these collages are not so black and white in reality. The malnourished and emaciated children and families along with a broken shelter are not the only type of poverty that exists in today’s world. The author in her article explains in depth about the flaws of the representation of poverty and her definition and arguments with credible sources as proof, as well as the a critique to her article.…

Volunteering at a dental clinic during my free time really exposed me to the field I wanted to go into. My experience with patients while shadowing Dr. Hasany at her dental office gave me a more intimate one-on-one perspective. My interest was beyond piqued as I watched the doctor perform root canals, extract teeth, fill cavities, treat gum disease, remove decay as well as listening to patient’s concerns. While shadowing the dentist, I understood the value of communication.…

As a way to do more in the community, I volunteered with Planned Parenthood in their community efforts to engage a wider audience through their voter registration drive. First I contacted Grace Miller, Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas’ Austin Community Outreach Specialist, to be a part of their upcoming events. I volunteered to head the Planned Parenthood table for the Foundation Communities Health Fair and 2 Mile Walk event on November 5th. Prior to the community event, I needed to meet with Grace and collect the pick up the Planned Parenthood Tabling supplies. This included a table, a number of informative brochures, event freebies (sunglasses, stickers, pens etc.)…

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2014 there were 46.7 million people in poverty with over 21% being under the age of 18 years old (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). This percentage of poverty is well above other developed countries (Santrock, 2015). For those who live in poverty, acquiring and maintaining basic life necessities such as food, clothing, housing and transportation is a struggle. For someone who has not experienced poverty, the conveniences that life offers, such as a quality education, job opportunities, healthcare, day care and homeownership are wishful thinking to the poor. Individuals living in impoverished neighborhoods are often at a higher risk of being exposed to criminality and violence.…
