Capstone Reflection

Great Essays
My capstone project was unique from everyone else, in my opinion. Most people organized an event and learned invaluable lessons about planning, budgeting, marketing, and many other lessons that can be learned from planning events. They learned lessons that one day I will hopefully learn; however, I am very thankful for not having an event based capstone. Doing research is not as flashy or exciting as having a 5k or having fundraising nights; but I believe it is equally beneficial. Although many people will never see or even hear about the research I did; it has shaped my life in ways that I did not expect. The research I have done has helped me become a better planner, a harder worker, and a more talented engineer. Yet, even greater than those …show more content…
Our test case was the 3 southernmost counties in Mississippi (Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson). We generated a random selection of data points based on recent hurricane disasters. So while the data was randomly generated, it reflected a scenario in which a hurricane hit southern Mississippi. Then using our algorithm, we were able to calculate the optimal values for this network. Our model returned a unique solution which means that our model was able to find the optimal value. If the model had returned 0 or many solutions then our model would not be finding the optimal value. After calculating the optimal values, we were able to verify the accuracy of our model through a few different factors. First, the more we used a truck the smaller the total cost of the entire network. This makes sense because it is cheaper to use trucks rather than drones. Also, as the drone’s velocity increased, the area it was able to serve increased. These were two of the many ways that we were able to verify the model. Now that the model has been finished, the paper is being revised and will soon be submitted to different journals with hopes of it being …show more content…
I learned a lot about research and what it is like. Research is a long sometimes tedious process where 90% of the time you do not see the light at the end of the tunnel. It often feels very jumbled and confused. However, a couple of weeks before finishing it all comes together in a beautiful picture. That is the beauty, in my opinion, of research. It is often a jumbled mess that seems out of place; but eventually it will all come together. I learned how important it is to plan well in the future. Dr. Maruf did a very good job of setting deadlines for each of us throughout the semester so that we would meet our goals. Without those deadlines, I do not think that we would have gotten everything accomplished like we did. Finally, I learned the value of hard work. I have always considered myself a hard worker; but the grad students and Dr. Maruf work very hard at their job. It instilled in me a desire to work harder and show that I belong. I am thankful for each of these lessons that I have learned; because they have shaped me for the better. This research has a few applications where it can be continued. First, once drones become better and more cost effective, this approach will be very useful in determining whether to use trucks or drones for all decisions. This will be very applicable to companies like Amazon and Fedex who may want to use drones to

The problem with the drones is that they can only deliver 10 miles from where they start which gives FedEx Express the advantage because they can ship from anywhere whereas Amazon can only ship from their warehouses. In order to try this I think that FedEx Express will need $100 Million. This would obviously have to be a…

The issue I will discuss is spies by Lewis H. Lapham. My whole life I’ve wondered if there are people who live in the shadows that gather information on our country’s enemies and even spy on the average citizen. I think every person should be concerned with being spied on it’s an invasion of privacy and breaks the rights we have as humans. It bothers me that there is a group of people that knows everything yet we only get told what they want us to know. The two main articles I will discuss are “Open to Inspection” by Lewis H. Lapham and “Rise of the Drones” by Rudolph Herzog.…

In “Drones” and the Future of Domestic Aviation, author John Villasenor, of the University of California Los Angeles, discusses Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), more colloquially known as “drones.” In particular, he describes the precarious ethical and legal issues drones present to society in the face of their increasingly rapid development. Initially, the author gives a brief, but detailed description of the advancement of unmanned aviation technology, including the vast numbers of applications, from both a domestic and government standpoint. For example, he describes that drones could be used to track and monitor wildfires, provide relief support and search for survivors during disasters, or even simpler things such as film making (Villasenor,…

The main benefit of using drones is due to the fact that it keeps soldiers out of dangerous situations. With a pilot behind an operating panel and the crew accompanying him or her. There are no soldiers in harms way but rather an object. Drones are also very efficient and can eliminate targets with extreme precision from high altitudes. The purpose of this letter is 1) to provide some background about drones and their applications in the medical field, 2) to indicate our deliverables for the medical drone design project and 3) to pose some specific questions to Massachusetts General Hospital about the project. Drones have been described as autonomous vehicles that can fly and navigate without the input from someone controlling it. Drones contain GPS chips inside to help the drone navigate and to help the pilot know where the drone is located at all times [1]. Researchers are currently developing drones that can respond to the environmental conditions that they are in [2]. Every drone also has a center of gravity that helps keep the plane from becoming imbalanced.…

A drone is any unmanned aircraft that one can program or they can be autonomous. These robots often use GPS technology to be more accurate when preforming a task. Additionally, in most states an individual must receive a certificate of authorization from the FAA before using drones for any purpose other than recreational. The Federal Government uses drones to make citizens lives safer and easier by monitoring wild fires, supporting law enforcement, and training the military. However, the demand for consumer drones is increasing rapidly due to the FAA Modernization and Reform act, which is a four-year plan to introduce new aviation technology into our government, causes many people to question the drone’s nature within our country (FAA Modernization…

My reflection upon the capstone project is very scary and rewarding at the same time. At the beginning of class, it seems very scary and intimidating. “A 20-page paper is due on a certain topic and then I have to present it?” That was the question I asked myself. I am not very good with talking in front of my peers and much less writing a 20-page paper when I have not been use to writing that much since high school.…
