Reflective Essay On Future Focused Leadership

The third book assigned to me for my capstone leadership book is Future-focused leadership: Preparing school, students, and communities for tomorrow’s realities. This topic is an interesting topic that I do not have a lot of experience with in my time as an educator. My administration in my years of experience has been focused on the present. We have a lot of pressure of performing high on our state standardized assessment and the goals of our school have been based upon those results. As an administrator, I need to think about the future of my campus. I know the present is important, but our campus has to have a plan to evolve throughout the years like Marx states. I need to focus on the process of education and work towards a common goal …show more content…
This process will take time and I must be patient with planning and watching our goals be achieved. I must be willing to adapt and make a plan that will allow my students to achieve highly as we adjust to the ever changing world. In the first part the first major point that jumped out to me is that a great leader is a connected generalist. “Leaders in the 21st century will need to be highly adept in their specialties. At the same time, they will be expected to be generalists, eager to connect a broad range of people and ideas” (Marx, 2006, pg. 12). This quote helps shape the change in educational leadership. It’s important that we learn to broaden our horizons as leaders for our students and be able to help students in different areas. As leaders we must continue to develop our environment and make it a place for everyone to feel safe and give them the optimal opportunity to achieve to their highest level. “Today’s complex challenges require resilient problem-solvers who are comfortable wearing multiple hats” (Low, 2014, pg. 20). We have to wear multiple hats as leaders of the future. It’s important that we possess many traits of quality leadership to be

Often times these issues are so vast and so severe that the idea of even where to begin is almost unfathomable. Many school systems face such dire problems, that it is almost impossible to resurrect their institutions to get them on the right path to success. By possessing the ability to recognize the most pertinent issues facing a school system, administrators can develop a plan of action and then implement that plan to hopefully create positive change that can have a lasting positive impact on the school.…

As an educational leader it is critical to understand that all students have the opportunity to learn, and there is a tremendous growth opportunity due to the descriptive nature at the school. While the achievement scores show underperformance, an administrator with integrity could offer the support to grow a young staff with high morale. Thus, the climate at the school is primed for an increase in capacity and through a strategic plan and development of the teacher and community, the school could be developed to grow learning of students. Reflection Growth Plan At the beginning of the course, I felt as though I knew the basics of what it would take to become an educational leader. Through assigned readings, class discussions and the ISLLC School Leadership Self Inventory I’m certain that the learning has just begun. In preparing my Artifacts Notebook, I chose resources that I feel I will be able to rely upon on my journey to and through leadership. I chose to include my quotes assignment, vision paper, ISLLC Standards, ISLLC School Leadership Profile, Good to Great and the Social Sectors, and a copy of a recent Marshall Memo.…

Throughout the many years of education a leader is taught how to learn, understand, cooperate, be opinionated, question things and to develop their own answers. The structure of the schooling systems allows an individual to develop all these behaviors that are essential to become a great leader. Not only will education allow them the ability to learn complex topics, but these topics will all become intertwined and bits from each class they have ever taken will shape their decisions and opinions in a way that if used correctly will help the individual become a great leader. For example, a great leader may take a class where leadership case studies are discussed and scrutinized. However, they are able to formulate a unique solution to the situation at hand by drawing up experiences when they were taking a finance class abroad and had to deal with a similar…

One of Johnson’s key leadership qualities is his attention to detail and planning. In creating his plan to prepare all students for challenging coursework, he began with research using data from students within his own district (Ujifisa, 2015). Because this data was collected in-house, the findings and subsequent plans were authentic for Rockville Centre schools. This was undoubtedly essential when presenting his plans to administrators, parents, and teachers. In order to generate change, leaders must create buy-in amongst key stakeholders (Fullan, 2007 ).…

Rose D’Alessio: A Teacher Leader at Montevallo High To be a leader, a teacher must think as leaders do. Rather than asking , “What am I going to do?” leaders ask, “What is it I am trying to get others to do, and what reasons might they have for doing those things?” (Schlechty, 2002). This thinking model describes Montevallo High School’s October Teacher-of-the-Month, Rose D’Alessio.…

While current political and economic factors have placed emphasis on workforce development, I believe the purpose of education is as diverse as those who access the services of a comprehensive community college. I believe it is the responsibility of leaders to provide an educational environment where each person is understood for who they are and valued for what they bring to the educational experience. I believe that leadership is service to others. It requires listening, building relationships, integrity, ethical decision making, and community. Leadership also requires setting high expectations, sustained by accountability and conflict resolution.…

I take a great deal of pride in guiding students to work together to improve themselves and their community. As the student body president of my school and the chairperson of my state’s student council, I push my fellow leaders forward through genuine trust, personal bonds and interpersonal harmonious relationships. It is my ultimate goal to leave others satisfied with their roles and the results that we achieved together by simply giving them a platform to share their voice. Focusing on critical aspects of humanism by using empathy, I encourage my students to take action. However, this does not make me the perfect leader—there’s no such thing.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

Reflection on Book Title “The Leader, The Teacher & You” I share the same sentiment with the author that “Walk the ground!” is essential for a leader to earn respect from the ground. Walking the ground also requires social competency skills such as being able to “communicate to influence” and having “interpersonal effectiveness”. In future, I will apply this principle of “Walk the ground!” by constantly engaging my superiors, peers and subordinates for their guidance and opinions through cohesion and feedback sessions on how various tasks can be done more effectively and efficiently. Through these sessions, I will seek to understand their concerns and challenges in their area of work.…
