In the book, My Brother Sam is Dead, among a family the oldest son, Sam, decides to go off and fight with the patriots. Sam comes from a loyalist father who disagrees with his son’s decision. Sam and his father get in an argument and Sam gets kicked out of the house and goes to war. Sam made the correct decision on fighting as a patriot. His conviction was shown in many ways throughout the book. Sam needs to fight for his own country that he is living in. “If they won’t let us be free, we have to fight.” “They’re three thousand miles away, how can they make laws for us? They have no idea of how things are here.” Here, it shows how they escaped from the king and the ruling that they hate, now they have to fight to become completely independent.

An example is how even without Sam, they kept the store running and making money; “Business was good in the store, too.” Tim is also becoming a young man and can now help Life, the father, with their duties. “Father was planning his usual trip to Verplancks Point, and this year for the first time I was going with him.” The final attestation to Sam’s conviction is that he is fighting the people who are hurting his hometown. They just kept coming on and on as if nothing in the world could stop them. Now I could see cannons each of them about twelve foot long and drawn by two horses.” After Sam goes off to fight, he comes back on breaks he has. Doing this for a while, someone frames him for being a cattle thief. Once acused by this, he gets shot. Even though Sam dies it was not because of fighting.
