I have lived in seven different households throughout my childhood. My parents had to pass me from household to household, because they were busy working day and night in order to provide for my family. I resided in several cities and states throughout these years, but the one thing that remained constant was my curiosity. Moving houses meant always having new people to get acquainted with and better understand. There was not much to do as a kid, so naturally, I listened attentively whenever my family members would tell me about their day and even tried to listen through the door when the adults were talking about their problems. My cousin being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol is a particularly memorable event. I remember …show more content…
Finding out the motive behind a person’s actions is crucial, and using the law to fight for justice is essential. In some cases, an innocent person is deemed guilty, and it is up the the attorney to fight for that person’s freedom. Unfortunately, many Chinese Americans cannot acquire the best legal representation, because they cannot speak English. This may lead to a longer sentence or higher restitution fees. As a first generation Chinese American female, this issue is meaningful and important to me, because I grew up around immigrants who cannot fend for …show more content…
I was extremely involved in co-curricular activities and held leadership roles in clubs and organizations during undergrad. I was member and the secretary of the Hmong Alliance Association, a club that spread awareness about the Hmong culture on a college campus that was predominantly Caucasian. Although I am not of Hmong origin, I strongly believe in the importance of spreading diversity and informing people about other cultures and traditions. I was a member of the Pre-Law Society and held the positions of president, treasurer, and secretary throughout all four years. I was also a founding member and the treasurer of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity. Because I held high leadership positions while making it onto Dean’s List twice, I was awarded the Sonoma State Student Organization Academic Excellence Award.
My upbringing, internship and work experience, and leadership positions have prepared me for the study of the law. I have become a self-starter and a natural leader through having to take the lead and make decisions on behalf of my parents my whole life. Being heavily involved in co-curricular activities has given me the abilities to independently manage and timely complete projects, as well as successfully contribute my skills to a team. Attending law school will only expand my skill set and will teach me the lessons necessary to help people who cannot help

In discussing criminal justice and criminology, there is a difference between the two fields, however, they are very narrowly related. The disparate criminal justice systems and practices of the 18th century lead to the formation of criminology as a field of study. Criminal justice is the study of the practical or everyday systems that handle crime. These include the police, courts, and corrections. In contrast, criminology is the study of the causes of criminal behavior and society’s responses and reactions to crime and criminal behavior.…

When a judge releases an offender on their promise to appear at the next court date, the order shows that the judge is serious that the offender is not to contact the victim. If the judge releases the offender without an order in place and the offender in turn hurts or kills the victim would not sit well in the public eyes. Another reason that order is routinely placed into effect is to prevent the victim from having to debate with the court on why they want an order. When a victim requests a protection order, the “criminal justice system process often victimizes them further" (LaViolette, & Barnett, 2014, p.76). Mrs. Lentz was very helpful and supportive to the victims who had no knowledge of the court process.…

Both adults and children can easily commit a crime either intentionally or accidentally. However, people under the age of eighteen will be dealt with differently compared to adults. As the law perceives them to be more ‘vulnerable’ compared to adults as they may not understand the law or the difference between right and wrong. For my field research paper, I reached out to a friend of mine who was arrested for his deviant behavior, and I interviewed him about why he did it and what was the result of his actions. My friend, Nico, is from the same hometown as me and we became friends in high school. He was a relatively quiet kid and stayed out of trouble all throughout high school. It was not until he went away to college that he found himself in trouble with deviance. He was not the typical case of a kid who goes away and cannot handle all of the freedom and responsibility that is presented with college.…

I have taken a lot of criminology classes since being at UWG. I enjoy criminology so much I took criminology classes even before I finished my core classes. Defining crimes across countries is important for the field of cross-national criminology because it allows criminologist to properly evaluate and measure specific crimes equally amongst different countries. However, this is one of the problems with cross-national studies of crime which is its inconsistency in the definition of crimes across nations. One of the remedies for these problems is researchers can focus largely on the crime of homicide because it’s the least definition that varies. In this essay I will reflect on the few assumptions and understandings I had about crime and see how they have changed. Upon arriving at De Montfort University to study Criminology and Criminal Justice, I had average knowledge about crime and punishment i.e. insight into biological and psychological perspectives of crime having studied A-level Law and Psychology beforehand. However I did expect to delve so deep into the history and other aspects of Criminology during this first semester. During A-level Law I have read many case studies of murder, manslaughter, GBH, rape etc. I found the main reasons behind committing these crimes were usually motives for revenge, loss of control, hate, rage, and biological inheritance of 'criminal genes ' such as Monoamine oxidase A which makes individuals more prone to exert violence.…

There are many different ways of approaching criminology. A couple of the main perspectives include sociological, psychological, and theological theories. First lets look at the psychological perspective. The psychological perspective looks at something that not many other perspectives do, it looks at both the offender and victim as individuals. It studies the underlying processes of human thinking and behavior in order to understand (and in turn deter) crime.…

In criminology, there are three main schools of thought-classical, positive and conflict. Each school of thought has a different viewpoint from one another, almost drastically so. Classical criminology believes that crime is committed when the benefits of committing a crime out weight the risk, such as imprisonment. Positive criminology theorizes that other forces, such as their psychological traits and social status, affect criminal behavior. The conflict view of criminology believes that wealthy and high ranking people in society use their power over those less powerful to control their lives.…
