Personally, I never considered myself privileged, until I was old enough to understand the concept of privilege. It was not until I reached fourth grade that I realized that I had advantages compared to other students in school. However, with great role models throughout my schooling, I was able to observe the advantages and disadvantages that certain students often had. Looking back at my life, I have been able to review my schooling growing up, the diversity I have encountered, and the teachers that have made an impact in my life.

Whenever I saw any of these types of students get picked on by others, I always wanted to intervene, but I did not have the strength or will power to do so. I regret those decisions, however, I never let it affect my learning. On my overall education though, these incidents where students did get bullied, it made me want to learn more about what I could do to help. I wanted to learn more about how to keep these incidents from happening, and to make sure that I would not accidentally make any assumptions about these people either. My interest in becoming a teacher grew over time. A combination of little instances in my life all got built up until it created a foundation within me where I realized that I wanted to become a teacher. Between all the connections that I created with my teachers and all the different ways that people grew around me, I knew that I too wanted to be a teacher. I remember back in elementary school the teacher would call on the kids who were not paying attention and ask them, “do you want to teach the class?” In that moment, I wanted to be those kids because I did want to teach the class. Over time, with all the group projects and presentations where you had to present to class, I slowly came to realize that I wanted to continue doing activities like that. One day in the future, I know I will finally get my chance to do

I never used to think of privilege in this context. I would usually think of it in a way in which, if it was given to you it can also be taken away. I got this idea from my parents, for example, once I got my license my parents were always threatening to take away my car and they would always say “driving is not a right, it is a privilege.” I would have never thought just being able to shop or walk the streets without feeling scared could be a privilege. For example, there have been times where I have been at a store and one of the employees was following me throughout all the aisles.…

My passion for art has followed me since I was five years old, when I was inspired by my kindergarten art teacher, who told us we could paint grapes whatever color we wanted. Being given that freedom made me feel ecstatic. That freedom I was able to have with art gave me a sense of purpose, even at a young age. However, when I moved to a different elementary school, the art teacher stripped us of that freedom. She was very cold and made people dread going to art class, including me.…
