It starred Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. It’s about two people who had to travel to Japan for business and meet and become good friends. All through the movie

* They could have watched the people to learn about their culture and ways of living.

* They could have studied up on Japans culture before going by studying their ways of living, geographic traits, foods, and language.

* They could have asked questions of the locals to try to understand the culture.

* They could have tried to understand the culture. If they understood, they wouldn’t have made fun of it.

* They could have tried to participate in customs and traditions.

* They could of used better moral judgment and try to respect Japans culture and treat them “as good as” one’s

Ethnocentrism is that a person or group of people think that their beliefs, culture or norms are the only thing right and everyone else is wrong. They are close-minded and selfish around their own beliefs and religion. They become racist and nasty to others. There are many examples of this in the world because there is some ethnocentricity in everyone. The example that was interesting to me is the movie Avatar.…

They both had prior experience of imitation. Japan had copied from China and Russia from Byzantium and the Mongols. They knew that learning from the West could be profitable and wouldn’t destroy their native cultures. In Japan, the Emperor Meiji sent out samurai to parts of the West to pick up ideas. Western style clothing such as ties, pants, and loafers replaced traditional samurai outfitting.…

Firstly, ethnocentrism is the idea that one’s own culture is superior to others. This provides a sense of purpose and unity within a culture, but alienates those outside of it. For instance, the US often thinks it is more powerful than other countries. This allows for Americans to find common ground and be able to unite.…

If somebody felt threatened, would they sit around and wait for something to happen, or do something about it themselves? This is something American’s wondered, up to December 7, 1941. On this Sunday morning, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Because of the vengeful Japanese, thousands of American citizens died on this day. Many people did not know why Japan would do such a terrible thing.…

    a. Migrant – a person that migrates or travels. The term also can be redefined when use in the text “Migrant Workers,” which means a person who moves place to place in order to get work, especially in the agricultural realm. I originally believed this term to be a discriminatory term for Mexicans, and not an actual term to describe farm workers. b. The Japanese arrived in the United States to be able to get more options to be successful, although when they made it to the U.S. No one knew how to speak Japanese, no one knew much about their culture. They were not accepted right away because people were very eerie of them. It was more of rude eyes staring at the Japanese, they’d have to go through a lot of discrimination while the other people in the United States are doing their own thing to not accept them. In these days of this generation, the foreigners and Japanese are now tied together and do not discriminate as much as they did back then in the year before Pearl Harbor attacked.…

This Indigenous Australian Education unit has presented and exposed me to a lot of new knowledge in relation to Indigenous Aboriginal identity, culture and stereotypes. My own family identity is of non-Indigenous Australian nationality, born and raised in Western Sydney, NSW. My family race is of white-Caucasian Australian which can be stereotyped for culturally consuming beer regularly and wearing cork hats, which I categorically do not do; and using typical Australian slang phrases such as “g’day, mate, fair go, stoked and “fair dinkum” (Australian Explorer, 2000). The only Australian phrases I use which gives this stereotype some merit are “mate meaning: friend and no worries meaning: no problem / it’s okay”…

Throughout my journey of completing my reconciliation plan of helping with the Indigenous tutoring and interviewing them I learnt a lot more than I did before I started. I learnt that there are so many different perspectives on the history of Indigenous people, not only about the stolen generation which many people are educated about but about the way their communities live now and how it has impacted the communities in todays society. I interviewed Indigenous students from St. Brigid’s College in Lesmurdie ranging from the ages of twelve to eight teen, which…

FGM and Menstruation Taboos: The Consequences of Imposing Morality Across Cultures The concept of paternalism dictates that those in positions of authority restrict the freedoms and responsibilities of those beneath them. The authorities convince the subordinates that these policies are for the good of the subordinates. The enforcement of female circumcision and menstruation taboos exemplifies paternalism. The practice of female circumcision and development of menstruation taboos shows how ritual pollution, false consciousness, and different ideologies are utilized to enforce something that is controversial. Through paternalistic methods, female circumcision and menstruation taboos are deeply rooted into many cultures and are good examples of how men keep women in subordinate positions.…

To begin, I want to say I find this course insightful. Through the weeks, I have come to accept that everyone has unconscious bias, but also, that it is not something to be ashamed of, if anything, it is something to learn from. Before this class, I was not sure how to articulate my experiences on cultural differences. Also, I did not have a good grasp on culture and how it affects us all differently. I have learned to recognize that I have my own ethnocentrism, that it is okay to feel proud of my own culture in the sense that, maybe there are other ways to do things, but I like my way better because that is the way I am accustomed to.…
