What are your beliefs on the purpose of education?
I believe the purpose of education is to gain knowledge, skills, and the ability to think and reason from individuals who are experienced and are knowledgeable in their field of study. Ultimately the knowledge and skills gained should help the individual to be self-sufficient and to be a productive and contributing member of society.

Does your purpose include social, economic, and political components? If so, what are the fundamental principles for your beliefs in each of these areas?
My purpose of education does include social and economic components; however, it does not include a political component. My fundamental principles for the social component is that we are all here for a purpose and it is up to us, with the help and guidance of others, to figure out what that purpose is. We all have an obligation to uplift one another so that we can all have a fulfilling life. My fundamental principles for the economic component is that we all must learn to be self-sufficient. We all need to have a means of sustaining ourselves without infringing on the rights and lives of

No, I don’t think all students should feel obligated to go to college. I don’t think a college degree will necessarily define someone’s success. I have had many students not go to college, but yet are very “successful” in their careers and personal lives.

Should education lean to the political” left” or “right?” and Can education be politically neutral?
I think that education should be politically neutral overall, but as a teacher/administrator I think I would lean towards the political right, because the “right” tends to be more conservative and even though I tend to think of my students as “my” children, they aren’t. As a school system we are not there to persuade our students to one side or the other of the political spectrum. As educators we should present both sides without bias and let our students think and reason for themselves.

Should we bring debate back into the curriculum of our schools?
Yes, I think debate should be put back into the curriculum in our schools. I believe that debate is a great way to teach student critical thinking skills. Students must do research on a topic (one they may or not agree with) and be asked to defend their assigned position. Students learn how to not only present information and justify their reasoning, but they also learn to anticipate the response or evidence of their opponent. Debate also has the added component of public speaking; an area our students tend to struggle

The following has my own perspectives and philosophy on education, sociality, moralities, and so on. I don’t intend on offending anyone or causing any discord: I want to unite humanity not alienate it. Education is the basis of human rights and not sending students to college would be a disaster. Education needs to be revamped in a way that it’s far more applicable to reality.…

To Martin Luther King Jr. the purpose of education is to help man reach real goals. MLK states that he is disappointed in the way “educated” men view the purpose of education, for example Eugene Talmadge was very educated he didn't have good morals which made him just as useless. Martin Luther King believes that education should be mode easy, but we are so self involved in believing that it is harder than it should be. Even people who are “supposed” to be educated do not think logically.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

This semester of class in Religion 275 has genuinely challenged me, pushed me to think and learn in a more intellectual manner, and has helped me grow as a debater and as a writer. We’ve wrestled with the wide variety of topics in Gadamer’s Truth and Method, we’ve talked about culture and diversity with Voltaire, we’ve dissected the idea of enlightenment with Hume and Kant, and we’ve touched on religion and the value of a liberal education in our last few texts. However, the topic that I have wrestled with the most this semester is the idea of a liberal education, and its relationship to the Gadamerian concepts of Bildung, Erfahrung, and spiel. As a student at one of the top liberal arts schools in the country, it is almost a necessity that I believe in the power of a liberal education. Personally, I’ve always believed that an educated person should be intellectually well-rounded, with an open mind that can lead to effective problem solving in a variety of worldly issues.…

Standing there, terror gripping my body, and palms sweating, I was about to give the first speech in debate in front of the entire class on the first day of school. I stumbled, mumbled, and fumbled my way through an almost never-ending speech on the favorite thing I did in the previous summer that lasted less than thirty seconds. This year, I am the sole fourth year debater at LSHS, and I am so glad that I have had debate for so long. Debate has shaped my life in ways that are integral to who I am. That nervous, self-doubting freshmen version of me is now a confident, experienced, and at least halfway decent debater.…

Throughout history, education has always played an important role in people’s lives. Education, or lack thereof, in many ways, shapes a person’s life and what they will become in society. Many people have argued over time on what the best form of education is and how it should be implemented. Harry Brighouse, in his book On Education, offers an argument that the central purpose of education should be to promote the flourishing of humans. While Brighouse does present a unique idea as to what the central purpose of education should be, his argument is impractical and not without its pitfalls.…

The purpose of education is to expand the minds of young individuals and to assist them in achieving future success. Students across America go to school to learn and prepare for their futures. Imagine all the students going into the classroom with brand new equipment, such as four stable leg desks, new chairs, and a brand new personal laptop administered by the school. This sounds like a school that most parents would want their children to attend. However the sad reality is that America’s education system is failing our children.…

Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…
