Dying is inevitable. However, many of us fear death. We fear death perhaps because it is something we are unsure of. No one really knows what happens after we die and this thought alone can understandably be terrifying. Rumi, in several of his poems, stated not to fear death. In Rush Naked, he states, “Don’t fear death…Your shame and fear are like felt layers covering coldness. Throw them off, and rush naked into the joy of death” (167). This is a bold statement, but one that is also well said. If we cannot avoid it, why should we waste time fearing it? This is something that I have struggled with. As I mentioned, I was raised of a Christian faith. Christians believe that after death, you either go to heaven or hell. A life lived in dedication to the Lord is rewarded with heaven, but a life that rejected the Lord goes to hell. Although I should not fear death, especially as a Christian, I certainly do. I know this fear stems from an unknowingness and is something that may change with time and age. Death is something we all have to accept, no matter what religion we are and whether we like it or not. We were not put on this Earth to live forever and that is a fact. A fear of death should not halt how we live our life, though. If how we live reflects what happens after we die, we should strive to be humble, gracious, kind, and we should have no reason to fear
