My Influences On My Autobiography

Improved Essays
My autobiography is important because it can help me find my identity, and it will direct me to recognize what different aspects of my life have influenced my personality. My autobiography contains experiences and observations that I have documented and possibly learned from. Many elements of my past shape my identity, but sometimes I would not notice them if I have not recorded it. Three distinct factors from my past have shaped and influenced who I am today; they are: my family, my Nigerian culture, and Christianity. My autobiography paints a picture of the influence of the three factors on me and my identity.

First, the interaction with my family affects my values. In my opinion value is something that is rated as highly important. Free

I originally thought culture was a way of life. Broadly defined, "[c] ulture refers to the shared values, beliefs and norms of a specific group of people" (Sincero). Culture is a product of observational learning. We humans learn through observations, "our knowledge, beliefs and behavior are acquired from the social group we live in"(Lib). If there was no culture, I know we will not seem as different from animals, because our culture is knowledge passed through generations that is observed and imitated. I view food as a product that should be appreciated, and I hate to see morsels go to waste since I know how priceless it can be to those who are starving. For too many in Nigeria food is sustenance; the difference between life and death. Every bite is a blessing, even if it doesn’t taste amazing. To others, it is a treat enjoyed which brings people together. Like most in Nigeria I eat with my hands. I wash my hands, scoop thick dough like paste with my hands and dip it in thick soup then I eat it. An example of what I eat is Nigerian recipe Okra soup and semolina. My food choices and eating style are a part of my culture, like dressing in traditional attire or speaking Igbo my native language, it is a daily confirmation of my cultural

It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

Though I’m still developing my legacy, I like to think that most people who know me, regardless of how well, consider me a person that can put a smile on nearly any face. From my time in high school as photo studio assistant getting babies to giggle on camera to my work as a personal trainer cracking jokes to help clients through the worst parts of their workouts; I learned that a little laughter can improve any situation. While this is a fairly simple impact to have on people, I do believe that it’s a powerful one. My own experiences with bereavement, chronic ill health and periods of poor mental health have shown me the value of a person that puts in the effort and time to get a smile out of someone. Though happiness is a pretty fleeting…
