Who Cares Speech

For my attention step of my Who Cares speech, I used pictures of my hiking trip so it would be easier to relate to. In addition to making it easier to relate to, it made it easier to understand the concepts I was talking about and how pretty the trails were. I also asked them if they had ever been hiking in Oregon so the audience could have a direct link to my topic. This made it even more effortless to relate and find a connection because all of the class lives in Oregon. After establishing a connection I gave a little fun fact about how many trails there are in Oregon, so they would know that are is a lot of opportunities to go hiking where we live. I then gave them a short and clear preview of what I would be talking about in my speech and stated my thesis so that it would be easier to understand and follow.

This gave the audience a direct link to my topic because most people have people have siblings or very close friends. I also clearly stated that my topic would be birth order so that the audience was aware that was what I was speaking about. I then gave them a short and clear preview of what I would be talking about in my speech. This made it easier to understand and follow the order of how I was going to present my topic.

My speech was well-organized because at the beginning of my speech I was very clear about the three things I was talking about. I did this by using words like first, second, and third. This made it clear what order they would go in and that they were different main points in my speech. In addition to making it clear what order my points went in, I made sure to use the same words to signal when I transitioned to a new point in the speech. This made it easier to follow and know when I was moving on to a new part of the

Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein had gone to an academic conference about a speaker talking about a sociologist known as Dr. X. The speaker had a lot of knowledge about Dr. X, he referred to many books and articles about Dr. X quoting long passages. But, the audience was confused as to why the speaker kept ranting on about the same thing and not until the end did it all make sense when a audience member asked a question. The speaker was prepared but was not clear to the audience confusing them for the entire speech. Keeping order also is another key ingredient when giving a speech or writing an essay to keep the audience active and engaged. In this case the speaker needed to address what he or she was claiming.…

Kelly Neuroth’s oral presentation discussing Artificial Intelligence in Power Systems was very effective in its delivery. While shorter than expected, the discussion efficiently introduced how artificial intelligence is being used in high output power plants to detect cracks. He then explained neural networks and how computers can be trained with photos of cracks, scratches and other defects. Using these photos, the neural network learns to tell the difference between cracks and not cracks. Outside of the information described in Kelly’s speech, there are technical aspects which leant to the overall success of the oral presentation.…

Rhetorical Speech Reflection Rhetorical techniques within my speech were subtle yet still managed to enhance the message I was trying to convey; that all firearms should be banned in the United States. I used a combination of rhetorical techniques including; anaphora, hypophora, a mild chiasmus, alliteration, and sententia. Halfway through my speech, I used anaphora when I was describing the different reasons people have for owning guns. This particular method was helpful because I wanted to portray the reasons as ridiculous and repetitive, which paired well with anaphora, since it added to the redundancy with its own repeating sentence beginnings.…

Good public speaking skills are rare, it takes a lot of practice and experience to express yourself fluently in front of a crowd. To me, a great public speaker is one who can put their words together in the simplest way possible, so that every spectator can understand the message. Also engaging with the audience in order to keep their attention. The last good speech I heard was by Congressmen John Lewis back in October here on campus, he had great stories, was very informative and didn’t hesitate to engage the audience. I would be bothered if a political candidate used profanity in the middle of a speech because it is extremely unprofessional, I would not want that person to represent me or my community.…

One of these is that every time I have the opportunity to take a trip to the BWCA, I am reminded of my values and why I stand for my beliefs. For example, I have learned about how important it is for me, as a person who is fiercely passionate about keeping the BWCA pristine and beautiful, to fight for this issue. The people on my Long Border trip last summer told me about the possible sulfide mining operations near the Boundary Waters. Because of this, when I joined my school’s speech team this year, I picked Original Oratory as my category. The speaker did well on speaking clearly, made a good eye contact, and most importantly was he had a good transition throughout his speech. Critique of a Public Speech In the speech, "How to Spot a Liar," Pamela Meyer discusses how people lie and what we can do to help spot lies easily. Overall this is a very strong speech. It has a few weaknesses, like average visual aids, but for the most part, the speech is very intriguing. This is a very well given speech, due to the speakers knowledge of the subject, her ability to keep the audience's attention, and her use of humor.…

Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
