The skills that we have today, that can be readily utilized at any moment, are our strengths. We have developed our strengths from hours of practicing our skills. As a future leader, it is our duty to know when our repository of strengths will not be enough to accomplish the task at hand. We are going to have to rely on our shipmates, who collectively, should have the strengths and skills needed to accomplish the mission. As a leader, it is our job to know when that time will be, and not be too arrogant to ask for help. Before NL110 I probably could have named off a few strengths I thought I possessed; but, after taking multiple different strengths and character trait tests, I can now recognize what I am innately good at, and what could use some work. Specifically, after taking the StrengthsFinder test, I now know that my signature themes are: Achiever, Belief, Context, Developer, and Empathy. Using this assessment of my most dominant themes of talent, I can focus on my signature themes, separately and together, to identify my talents, build them into strengths, and in the future, perform with success (“Your Signature Themes”). How I respond to different situations, whether in the classroom, company area, or in peer relationships, will be determined by my strengths. When we are asked why we wanted to come to USNA, most plebes give the typical cliché answer of “I want to serve my country” or something along those lines; we all want to serve or we would not be here. The reason I came is, sure, for the cliché reason, but also because I did not want to burden my family financially with the expenses of civilian college, and I wanted to become the best person that I can. Over Plebe Summer, the plebes talked amongst ourselves often about the reasons we all came to USNA. The upper class would always tell us that our reason for staying at the Academy would be most likely be different from the reasons we came; I see that now. I see that the reasons I want to stay are for the people I have met and grown close to. Through our experiences over the Plebe Summer and our resocialization into the military, I feel closer to some of these people than countless of my closest friends from back home. Also, I believe the Academy is the best place to observe great leaders, and to develop skills. Therefore, allowing me to grow myself into the overall bester person I can be, and the kind of leader that I want to
