At the beginning of this course I identified my appearance as form of nonverbal communication that I could improve on, and my writing speed as a weakness. By providing a means to measure my progress, the SMART goals that I created for assignment one proved to be an effective tool. Although the initial goals provided a plan to improve my skills in these specific areas, I quickly recognized that my writing goals needed to evolve as I identified additional areas of weaknesses that were contributing to my slow writing speed. My goals to improve my professional appearance were also redefined as I developed a better understanding of myself.
After reading the instructor feedback for assignment one, I re-evaluated who I really am and revised the goals that I had created to improve my appearance. Initially I had committed to getting up 30 minutes earlier each morning to apply makeup and style my hair, and budgeted $40 per pay period to purchase quality work attire. As an individual who lacked business writing knowledge, I struggled with writing and dreaded the thought of having to write a formal or semi formal business document. Many of the reports and proposals that I prepared were in an essay format. I can recognize now, that I was over complicating the documents that I prepared. This caused me some concern about my ability to effectively perform any job that required writing skills, and has subsequently prevented me from applying for positions that listed strong writing skills as a requirement. Having taken this course, I no longer feel anxious about writing and feel that I am better prepared to pursue the next step in my career. My goal to pursue a senior management position has not changed, but I now feel that my career options have
