In “My Antonia” the journey is important to the narrator because it sent him out into the world and allowed him to experience a fresh beginning. The narrator, Jim, had only experienced a limited part of the world. He states that Jake’s view of the world was not much wider than his, causing a feeling of uncertainty and joy in the coming voyage. Along the journey, Jim experiences the world in the people he meets, such as the train conductor. The conductor is described as “an experienced and worldly man”, who tells Jim of places beyond Nebraska. The narrator is also impacted by the journey because of what it ultimately symbolizes, new beginnings. At age ten, young boys begin to grow into the world and step into a new stage in their lives. Storytelling is a way to communicate to society in a way that creates a relatable instance such that the reader can see themselves, or a version of themselves, within the story. Storytelling also is a way to demonstrate the struggles of other individuals within a society that a reader my not experience directly, but can nonetheless gain a broader understanding of different struggles within society. Although there are many ways to utilize storytelling techniques, I will apply the approach of Rites of Passage to three of the novels we’ve read this semester. The Rites of Passage that I will be analyzing are those within the stories, Houseboy, Woman at Point Zero, and A Walk in the Night. In these stories I will argue that through the characters ', Toundi, Firdaus, and Willieboy, Rites of Passage there is a physical altercation that caused a stunt in their ability to grow emotionally as a character, thus disabling them to continue to their ultimate stage of their reincorporation into society.…

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance centralizes around Lee Geum-ja, a 19-year-old girl who pays the price for some bad decisions, is blackmailed into falsely committing the murder of a child. After 14 years in prison of earning the respect and loyalty of other female prisoners Lee Geum-ja uses these formed connections from her time in prison to seek out revenge against the real murderer Mr. Baek. Initially my enjoyment level of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance scaled similarly along its two predecessor films however in the second half of the film I believe the unharmonious shift in Lady Vengeance’s narrative structure waivered a little too much for my liking. Specifically the heavily emphasized subplot involving Lee Geum-ja’s daughter as well as the subplot including the family members of the murdered children.…

Near the end of the first story, Ántonia states to Jim that “things will be easy for you. But they will be hard for us” (Cather 90). “You” in this instance includes Jim and all other white people of America who have no trouble being accepted into colleges and getting jobs, while the “us” is not only Ántonia but also immigrants to America. Ántonia notices how the dominant ethnicity receives the first opportunity in education and work; while immigrants or people of other ethnicities are secondhand to them. Also apparent to Ántonia is how backgrounds and social status impact one's opportunities both in and out of America.…

In early American history, people expanded the nation west, creating Westward Expansion. In My Ántonia, details of Westward Expansion and the creating of western American civilization is seen. Many immigrants moved to America in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century, and many of them set out west to make a living for themselves farming or ranching like so many did in My Ántonia. The railroads, just like in the book, brought so many of these immigrants and settlers to the West. Some settlers expanded their journey even further than Nebraska, the Dakotas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, and went to the Yukon and Alaska in search of gold during the Gold Rush, like Tiny in My Ántonia.…
