My Analytical Essay: Changing My Writing Style

Improved Essays
Throughout the year, I learned to write in a variety of styles. These styles include poetry, vignettes, and journals. My writing style has changed most significantly in my analytical essays. I used to only use the quotation to prove and explain plot points, but now I have learned how to use the quotations to explain ideas. For example, in my essay about A Rose for Emily, I said, “Emily asks for some poison to kill Homer and sleeps with his dead corpse every night” (Wang “Short” 1). This was a clear plot point that I still tried to prove, which was completely unnecessary and took away from the main focus of the essay. Now I actually use the quotations to prove another idea that’s more discrete and more pertinent to my essay. For example, in

Rhetoric can be analyzed and broken down in various ways, and at times, in ways that the writer did not intend. When a reader begins to analyze a text, they intend to break it down into a matter they will understand. Yet, in several instances the reader does not understand how rhetoric’s role comes into play and how the writer intended to use these rhetorical concepts. In the texts, Writing with Teachers: A Conversation with Peter Elbow by David Bartholomae, and, Being a Writer vs. Being and Academic: A Conflict in Goals by Peter Elbow, rhetorical concepts such as ethos for example, are analyzed by the intended audience to help gain a better understanding of their main goals and the reasons for their stance in the discussion. With this being said, Elbow takes his work to a personal level and emphasizes a better use of ethos than that of the work of Bartholomae, and both use other forms of ethos such as arête, phronesis and eunoia, to better their argument.…

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…

You would think a writing class would only teach you how to write papers, but not until college did I realize the complexity of a writing class where other than writing it integrates methods of research, reflection, and reading for instance I never realized the complexity of reading and what to simply look for when reading text. In high school the idea of talking to the text where writing notes on the side while reading normally gave me enough information to get by. Thus never grasping the complexity of the text because the means were unknown. It was not until I was introduced to the rhetorical situation diagram in 1020. Prior to the rhetorical situation diagram we were given an assignment where we were to interpret three different viewpoints central around a single argument about oil.…

Since our first attempt at writing an essay in elementary to middle school, we are told the main components to writing an essay is the ‘beginning’, ‘middle’, and ‘end.’ All of which holds true today, but as we move from one grade to the next, the standards for a ‘good’ essay changes for the better. Rhetorical strategies, devices, and appeals also known as rhetoric, is what we learn in high school (Stotsky 10). The continuation of the expanding knowledge is what makes us alter our writing strategies, from the material taught to us in our adolescent years of elementary school and every year thereafter. It is in high school that we are taught to analyze and dissect the author, as well as the author’s work ceaselessly.…

My experiences with writing have been somewhat limited until I signed up for English 101. I have to admit that English was not my favorite subject in school. I never felt like I was any good at writing, and spelling is still not my strong suit. I always felt like I was better at math. My attitude towards writing was my biggest hindrance to my success.…

A lot can happen in just ten short weeks. I feel like I have grown from an amateur writer to a more advanced writer. But do not get me wrong, I know there is still much more room for improvement. The first half of the quarter was focused on the Rhetorical Analysis Essay and the second half was more geared towards the Rhetoric in Practice Project and Essay. At the time, I was just completing these assignments because they were mandatory, but looking back at the quarter I have noticed great improvements and growth not only as a student, but also as a writer.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

My Writing Process: When I received the prompt for our first essay I glanced at it, and tried to understand the main point, the thing we were being asked to write about. As you many others writing does not come naturally to me, so I knew that I would have to have read the prompt several times before I even considered beginning on the rough draft for my first essay. After reading the prompt in class I started to highlight phrases, questions, and anything that stood out to me. Mean while all these thoughts were running through my mind, at the same time I was thinking of way to put all those ideas that were in my head on actual paper. Ideas that make sense in my mind but always have a hard time getting them down.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

Throughout English 2010 I have grown immensely as a writer. Perhaps the most useful skill that I 've learned is how to use different methods of writing. Each piece of writing has a different purpose, and usually has different flow than other writing. For example, we wrote an exploratory essay at one point in the semester, and later wrote a persuasive researched essay. These two essays have completely different structures that reach out to the audience and aid the writer in expressing his or her ideas.…

    Creativity Vs Discipline

Within good writing, there is a distinct balance between creativity and discipline. Strunk (1918) argues, “In exposition and in argument, the writer must likewise never lose his hold upon the concrete, and even when he is dealing with general principles he must give particular instances of their application” (p. 23). To write an effective analytical paper, a writer should convey ideas by being conscious of mechanical and grammatical mistakes but should also develop personal style and creativity within those constraints. Rosenwasser and Stephen (2011) argue that the five analytical moves are the best way to convey a message while effectively balancing creativity and discipline. These “moves” begin with first, completely understanding the subject…
