My African Experience

Improved Essays
I attended A Night in Africa Event on April 1st. It was a great opportunity to experience the elements of the various African cultures. I feel like in America we focus on the American black experience, but often forget that we have immigrants straight from Africa who are very in touch with that unique culture. It was very cool to see so many different students representing their country of origin. It was a great opportunity to learn about cultures I knew very little about, and to see UND students perform their talents. Some things that stood out for me include the fact that it just wasn’t black Africans that were a part of this event, but also North Africans were also a part of the show. I thought this was important, as many different colors …show more content…
I won’t pretend like I knew all about Africa, or even that this event added a lot of knowledge about it to my brain. I did however show me how little I did know about Africa, and gave me a better appreciation of the cultures in Africa. The most surprising thing was that I didn’t even know what the Egyptian flag looked like, or even any of the other countries’ flags. It was nice to hear about and see the cultures of countries that I knew little about beforehand and become more aware of these cultures. Another reason why events such as this one are important, is because it exposes people to other cultures. Not only is the knowledge important, but also the way the view diversity afterwards. For example, this event might help someone realize that they shouldn’t assume that because someone is black, that their family has a history of slavery. Also, realizing that Africa itself is made up of a wide variety of cultures is also a valuable to gain. I believe that these events deepen respect for other …show more content…
As, a future social worker, being culturally competent is a key skill which is necessary. I believe that one can never be too knowledgeable about other cultures, and that it is a continual process. This event was a great opportunity to learn and enjoy cultures in which I am not familiar with. I hope to attend event like this one in the future and gain even more cultural experience. If I had to add any recommendations, it would be to focus more on culture and less on talent. I think that was their intention, however this event raised my interest in learning more about African countries and it would have been great to do that at the event. Particularly, I’m interested on the variations in the many countries that encompass Africa. I’d love to have a better understanding of African cultures, as this event only offered a little. To sum up my experience, I would say that not only did I have a fun night, but I also gained a lot from it. The chance to experience other people’s cultures is a great thing, and I am glad I got to be a part of this event. African culture is rarely seen in North Dakota, but it is still amazing part of this country and the world. To respect others, one must step into their world, and experiencing their culture is the first step. I learned a lot from this event and hope to continue to learn more about the African cultures, and other unfamiliar cultures in

The Chicano Park day was eventful because of the community getting together to celebrate the culture and park. It was impressive to see the amount of people that attended the event and how diverse, especially because of the community it is located in I expected it to be particularly the neighbors. In association to the news and the elections, it is important to see the amount of support that the Mexican culture is receiving and together they can withstand anything. On my walk to the park I noticed that it was going to be crowded because of there not being any parking so we had to park down at the trolley station. This is my first time down there for this event, it was impressive because I would have never thought that due to the amount of people…

    1) The actions of Denmark Vesey, Nate Turner, David Walker, and the incidents involving the Amistad and the Creole had equally important effects on how whites and blacks viewed each other. 1a) Denmark Vesey: A freeman who bought his freedom from a lottery drawing, he was a preacher who dreamed of freeing himself and his slave brothers to resettle on Haiti (after seeing the successful slave revolt that resulted on the island). Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

The monument I would create is in Boston, Massachusetts, which is a historically rich city, but I would create a monument to one specific event named the Boston Massacre. This is a significant event in the history of United States, where British troops murdered some Americans after they formed a mob. This partly led up to the Revolutionary War where America fought Britain. This monument would be made of dolomitic marble. It would contain a 20 x 20 replication of Paul Revere’s engraving of the Boston Massacre, and under it an inscription explaining the Boston Massacre.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

One of the most incredible video that I watched to complete a Dance Observation assignment for Dance class is the video of: “Wade in the Water from “Revelations” by Alvin Ailey Company. This video was published on YouTube on November 25, 2007 and performed at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This video is very beautiful and impressive at the first time I saw it. Then I keep watching it again to really focus on the detail of very movement and sections. The dancers presented a movement of an African American slavery era being empowered by drowned in the water but keep standing strong tightly.…
