My Accomplishment Essay

When I think about my biggest accomplishment, my health and fitness journey comes to the forefront of my mind. Growing up, I was always on the heavier side of the scale in comparison to other kids. To be more precise, my doctor once told me that I was in the 90th percentile on the body mass index for other males my age. This placed me at a threshold that meant I was extremely overweight and on the verge of obesity. My weight was something that others used as a target to bully and demean me. So when I began high school at 14 years old, I decided to make a change for my health and wellness. Getting in shape, eating correctly, and working out served to bolster my confidence and help me look healthier. It was a surface level reason to enact change, …show more content…
As I mentioned before, my reasons for trying to understand health were superficial. I simply started because I wanted to look better. Just like any other goal, the results of my efforts weren’t immediately tangible. There were times when I was discouraged and questioned whether the process was worth undertaking. Sure enough, however, the number on the scale moved and the composition of my body changed. In this regard, it is the process that creates the impact on me, not just what I see in the mirror. Fitness has transformed into a force much greater than looking aesthetic. It grows my character and provides me with values that translate into every aspect of my life—school, friendships, social and professional relationships, and my overall approach to each …show more content…
But most of all, it has taught me to find the courage to trust in myself and my ability in the face of doubt and fear. It helps me to understand that there is never room to be complacent and that walking headstrong into uncomfortable, new endeavors will lead to personal growth. I have forged a very positive outlook on life and its opportunities because of the lessons that I learned in this field. Whether I am taking up a new skill, trying to improve my professional marketability, or learning new material in class, my fitness journey reminds me that starting something is always the most difficult part. It reminds me that it is okay to be a novice and that rewards of a trade come from being patient and giving a wholehearted effort to the craft. This passion helps shape my identity and perspective on life with each day that passes.
