My Ability To Read In Class

Decent Essays
My ability to read and to critically think has greatly improved this semester. This is due to the example texts which we read in class. Short stories and excerpts introduced me to different styles of writing and difficulty levels. As we discussed them in class, I found myself comparing them to other texts and thinking about the negatives and positives of each one. I have been able to apply this skill to my own, independent, reading, so that I now think critically of everything I read and read new genres as well.

I feel as if I’ve grown a lot while taking english 3 and having Mrs. Stigger as my teacher. I do know I have got many more ideas while writing now and I know a write more clear and presentable. Rhetorical devices is something I can say I have learned so much more about this year. I have learned to understand them more by using them in my writing by applying them when I need to use them.…

My skills deepen this semester, with the lit circle book, Hole in my Life. In Of Mice and Men I didn’t apply much thought. When something stood out I would usually underline it or write, “why? How?”, but with the lit circle books I chose a thought provoking page (since we only got one), and I pulled it apart with analytical thinking. I made connections with previous pages and wrote what they meant.…

I’ve never worked as hard or as passionately on my work as I have done this year, and my new found way of doing my work is what made me grow as a student. As a reader, I was able to advance my way of reading, considering how I read way more into the text and note patterns too. This is probably because you manage to drill into my head the sort of guidelines needed in order for this to happen, such as if an author thinks something is important he’ll repeat it. Due to these lessons, I changed how I wrote my essays since I became even more invested in my writing. And I became a bit more confident in my writing due to my friends who complimented my writing and you who believed in me and in my writing.…

This semester I feel that I have somewhat improved as a writer. The first thing from this class that has helped me was the peer reviews. They have decreased the nervousness that I used to feel when I would ask people to help and for suggestions. The second thing that impacted me as a writer was the discussion post about different writing styles and how different people had different processes. The one that impacted me the most was the video about David Sedaris.…

Over the course of this semester, this class has reshaped me as both a reader and a writer. It has helped me think more critically about work I read, and to analyze the reading for components of arguments, or to find bias in the piece I am reading. This class has developed my writing style, and has aided me with becoming a stronger writer. I am now able to write persuasively, while recognizing the apposing side’s point of view. Before I started this class I was terrible at writing persuasively, however, now that I have taken this class I have learned plenty of techniques that will help me with further argumentative pieces.…

The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…

Though at times, reading nonfiction, scholarly works daily feels tedious and annoying, it has indubitably extended my intellectual capacity. Reading and discussing so often has fostered the highest intellectual engagement that I have ever had in my life, and has significantly impacted the content of my essays. Considering that when I read I gain more knowledge, my essays are now better defined and developed with depth and thoroughness instead of fluff and lack of insight. I have always been opinionated, creative, and assertive, and this has helped me to convey exactly what I aspire to say in my essays. My voice and unique sensibility in my writing has always been obvious.…

Over the course of this semester, I have learned about things that I did not know and things I did know. Some things that I have learned is how to be a critical thinker but in more detail. Over the semester, you gave us a list of questions that we would have to answer after analyzing a piece whether it be a painting or music video. The questions consisted of considering the audience of the piece, considering the argument of the piece, and even considering what we thought about the piece. These questions seem simple enough but they taught me alot.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

The books and articles I read this summer taught me to take common topics and change the way I look at them. They covered a wide variety of subjects such as adult life, capital punishment, school shootings, and how my own mind works. They all received critical acclaim and it is obvious why. All the authors cause their readers to question the way they have been looking and going about things. David Foster Wallace’s commencement speech to Kenyon College graduates has received praise because of his ability to break the set pattern of commencement speeches.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
