My 3rd Battle-Personal Narrative

Decent Essays
I am about to enter my 3rd battle. The skunk told our regiment that we should be engaged in a battle sometime tomorrow. Some of the fresh fish that were recruited last week got the quick step and won't be fighting. All that is left to eat is goobers and sheet iron crackers. It doesn’t settle well in the bread basket. Eating this food makes me miss your cooking. We still got good ole tar water. The skunk says we shouldn’t drink before battle’s cause we’ll get wallpapered. My possum Jim got shot in the last battle, he was a real chief cook and bottle washer. The bonesaw took a look at him and said he might not make it. He said he wasn’t shot with a musket, he said that he was shot with a pepper box. I am just hoping we stay strong and don’t

O’Reilly wrote about the Confederacy’s condition during the four year war and how gruesome it was for the soldiers. “Starvation, literal starvation, was doing its deadly work. So depleted and poisoned was the blood of many of Lee’s men from insufficient and unsound food that a slight wound which would probably not have been reported at the beginning of the war would often cause blood poison, gangrene, and death.” (O’Reilly 57).…

No more than two minutes passed and two very dirty men that were heavily armed, entered the Generals CP. They came to attention, saluted and held it until the General returned it, “As you were.” MG General Boney said. He thought again, they are armed to the teeth, he wondered why no one in his command tried to disarm them, but it was a bit too late for that. “What can the 28th Infantry Division do for the 19th Special Forces Group?”…

We were all miffed and were of the opinion that now the American Army was showing its true face. Since the war was over and the Americans had their soldiers back from German captivity, we felt that perhaps we were now being punished for the concentration camps. To a large extent, however, the food shortage was offset by the actions of Captain [Robert L.] Everett and the professional culinary skills of our own cooks. According to rumor, Capt. Everett had connections with Army kitchen personnel and was able bring more food into the stockade than was authorized.…

One hut housed a dozen soldiers. They were provided very little and the term “roughing it” doesn’t begin to cover their living conditions. Many were without shoes, and clean water was a luxury. During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

Disgustingly enough, many Hardtacks housed weevils- a type of beetle- and maggots. The Union soldiers also relied on cornmeal, molasses, coffee, and rice. Many also relied on care packages from home; John Redfield wrote to home saying, “… send me some cider put up in bottles, and some apples… and don’t try to send me any cake or anything that will get smashed, but I want anything that will keep a week. (Page 7)”. However, the Confederates were not as lucky as the Union soldiers.…

I live my life on a legacy of war survivors. My family's standards toward success have always been a key factor as I was being raised. As a young musician, my grandfather’s optimistic views deteriorated the moment he got drafted for World War II.Appointed as commander in the tanks divison, my grandfather felt his everlasting ego grow as he protected his country. The moment of victory however soon vanished when an oncoming tank shot down my grandfather’s tank, destroying everything in sight. He was able to escape from the commander’s hatch, but as he struggled to get his best-friend out of the tank, the tank exploded.…
