DNA AND MUTATIONS DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) carries the genetic instructions. In 1953 the structure of DNA was discovered for the first time by J. Watson and F. Crick. They opposed that DNA is made up of two long strands or twisted chains. The structure of the DNA is similar to a ladder, with the sugar, and phosphate molecules forming the sides, and the base pairs forming the rungs. The shape of the DNA is double helix. There are 3 billion Human DNA, and more than 99% of those bases are identical in all humans. Mutations are changes in the inheritance of organisms, which occurs from changes in the sequences of the nucleotides. It changes the genetic information in the DNA, and can therefore change the appearance of certain features. A mutation in a protein coding part can cause the protein to malfunction, to function less effectively or to be missing entirely. The impact mutation on health, and development depends on how essential the altered protein is. …show more content…
Some problems associated with mutated DNA are that it introduces defective genes. It can result in the loss of genetic information, causing biological systems to become less complex. It can lead to abnormalities of species. The changing of one single base pair known as point mutation can result from chemical damage proceeded by copying error. If there is a mutation in DNA, the nucleotide sequence is changed, thus changing the sequence of the mRNA codon. This leads to the production of wrong amino acid occurring in a non-functional polypeptide. Sometimes, there is no effect or the protein is boosted.
