Mutant Fleas Terrorize Midwest Analysis

GUYS, MUTANT FLEAS ARE TERRORIZING THE MIDWEST! Well, not really. Dave Barry's story about mutant fleas is basically a fake news article, that is very unrealistic, making fun of the way that news reporters blow things out of proportion, and tell a story, rather than what actually happened. There are not actually mutant fleas and giant flying cats, and berry hints at this in the story. Dave Barry's short story called “mutant fleas terrorize midwest”, there were lots of examples of high humor, more than low humor. In most cases, there are examples of irony, and hyperbole, to making satire for us have somewhat of a sensible chuckle. Like the title, these examples include tax plans, mutant vampire fleas, and the story going back on itself when it talks about giant flying cats.

One of the elements of humor in this text, is irony. The reader will not find an area in the text without coming by even a small bit of irony, that makes the reader just feel a small laugh in their head, nothing big. One example of irony is in the first two sentences, were the news reporter says “I was going to write about the president's revolutionary new tax plan will affect you, but it occurred to me that I really don't care about how the revolutionary new tax plan will affect you.” This is very ironic, because is it not the job of a

In most cases, there are examples of hyperboles, and irony, adding a satirical note to make us smile. To me the overall meaning of the text, is to show the follies of news reporters, sugar coating or over exaggerating news stories. This is kind of a problem , because people want the real stories, and not the sugar coated ones. If all we get is story added on to the real story, we will believe it because it comes from a “credible” source. Dave Barry does a very nice job of using these comic effects to show satire.

Satire is one of the most powerful tools a writer has in his arsenal. Humor can level an uneven playing field, disarm an opposing argument, expose a jarring fallacy in the logic of an opponent. “A Letter to the Warner Brothers, by Groucho Marx, and “American Autumn”, by Mark Steyn, both demonstrate the wide ranging and potent effect highly developed satire can lend a text in achieving its purpose and reaching its audience. However, when you go beyond the surface value, there is an incredible difference - the reader can see the two individual faces of satire, the juvenalian and harsher horatian, peering out from behind the rhetoric of each text.…

Irony characterizes the tone in which the narrator describes the conclusions of the investigating commission. He reports that, "Again and again, due justice must be rendered the investigating commission. It had done everything possible not only to catch the criminals but also to explain everything they had done. And, indeed, everything was explained, and the explanations must be recognized as both sensible and irrefutable. " It is true that the explanations must be recognized as true, but the narrator and the reader both know they are untrue.…

It is important that the irony or the sarcasm the satirist uses be clear enough for the audience to understand since some people take programs like the Colbert Report too seriously. Journalist Christopher Olver summarizes the study, published in the International Journal of Press/Politics, “The Irony of Satire: Political Ideology and the Motivation to See What You Want to See in The Colbert Report”, “Overall, the research indicates that the “ambiguous deadpan satire offered by Stephen Colbert in The Colbert Report is interpreted by audiences in a manner that best fits with their individual political beliefs” (Olver). From the findings in this study, it was proven that when watching satire, some people do not understand the irony and their own beliefs are polarized even if the satire is actually mocking their beliefs. Olver states that the Republicans who watched the Colbert Report increasingly believed that his conservative act mirrored his true political stance. Contemporary political satire does not work if the intended audience lacks the similar sort of semi-cynical and suave sarcasm seen in today's youth and usually progressive…

We need change from the middle up and down. There should be investments on things that will help the majority of this country create opportunity. One good point Colbert says We’re an aspirational society we all dream to get into the 1%…

“Guest of a Nation “was interesting to me. Reading the short story I found plenty examples of Irony. As the Narrator introduces the characters of the story, you are almost led to believe that the gentlemen are old friends or comrades. The use of Verbal Irony is evident when ‘Chum” was spoken as if it were group of buddies sitting around the poker table.…

Political satire is a humorous, ironic, or sarcastic examination of the political arena in an attempt to expose absurdity and hypocrisy. A controversial issue, satire with a political bent may be viewed anything from mere folly to unpatriotic or even rebellious behavior. Politicians, political parties, legislation, and the political media are all common targets of satirical review. In some cases, attempts at satire may simply break down into joke telling, such as making fun of a congress person's voice or strange outfits. True satire attempts to rise above simple comedy, with the aim of exposing an underlying absurd truth or paradox.…

Satire has long been an integral element in yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows literature. Whether we choose to believe it, satire has always burdened a multitude of interpretations and purposes for its use, nevertheless, many writers and audiences who are exposed and/or write under this element may choose to believe satire contracts one specific purpose. During these multitudes of oppositions about the purpose of satire, Botton had written about the fundaments on why the element creates such an intriguing touch and draws a large array of audience. Writers are constant with the disuse of Satire and often surpass the origin of its use; satire is more than an element adding qualitative features or an expression of tone to add a dash of humor.…

” Even though this is a quote I’ve repeated many times, this shows that many lines can contain many different elements of comedy. And in this case it’s irony, as it’s ironic that they’re throwing away the past tense and calling it a thing of the past as it literally describes the past. To go back to my commentary, lines can have many elements of comedy. So I’m going to use another line I’ve used many times before, from paragraph 3, it states, ““With our current budget, the past tense must unfortunately become a thing of the past.” ” This is an example of irony because we just read something you wouldn’t really expect.…

Satire is used in literature to criticize and point out society’s flaws. The criticism is usually masked in humour. Irony is commonly used in satires to expose flaws, an effective example is John Smith’s A Modest Proposal, in this essay he effectively uses irony, to communicate his argument about the poverty in Ireland. Similarly, in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale she criticizes the society that women live in. Atwood uses satire to display the oppression of women in political, religious and social aspects through the use of allusions to the Cultural Revolution, Salem Witch Trials, the Taliban and the Old Testament.…

Satire is the use of comedic means to criticize real problems in the worlds. Examples include the Weeknight Update on Saturday Night Live, MAD TV, and late night shows with John Stewart, John Oliver, or Stephen Colbert. There are many more forms of media and writing that use the style of satirical writing to educate the public of current news while adding a comedic effect to it. While satirical writing is an effective way to express an author’s bias, it does not always change the way society thinks about a certain subject. It can be used to bring awareness, add comedic relief to serious events, or even to humiliate a certain subject or event.…

Satire has tremendous power. People feel frustrated and annoyed when others directly criticize them. Nevertheless, satire is much more terrifying because it is a type of implicit criticism. In the meantime, satire can also be a thought-provoking humor which may make people laugh at first, but after they understand the underlying meaning of the satire, the laugh will be full of tears. The authors use writing literatures which are incongruity and exaggeration to expose and criticize social issues.…

Different types of irony are used throughout the book, but the situational irony that takes place at the end stands out. It relates to what really happened during the Russian Revolution in 1917. When the animals rebel against Mr. Jones, their main goal is equality, but after everything that occurred “[The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, but already it was impossible to say which was which]”(pg.141). This ending to the book questions the idea of a utopian society, and if one is possible. Another form of irony that takes place is verbal irony.…
