Muslim Female Role Model

Improved Essays
I’ve experienced a lot of firsts for my family. I was the first born in America, first to graduate high school, and soon, first to attend university and graduate school. This is something that has given me a lot of pride but also stressed me out with no one to look to for advice. Even though my parents are my support system, they have never been able to help me academically and I was stuck on what to do when I couldn’t figure something out at school. This has been the main cause of my adversity, but I thank the determination my background gave me for my triumphs. I’ve always wanted nothing more than to make my parents proud, and be an educated Somali Muslim female role model, because there haven’t been many people who look like me succeed.

The article “What It Means to Be a Muslim Woman in Today's America” by Reem Nasr, explores what it’s like to be Muslim in America at this current age. It shows how women are questioned for their clothing and their religion. The article also informs the reader how people badmouth muslims by grouping them with terrorist even though they have no evidence to back their statements up. At this age, many muslims go through so much work just to integrate with society by working while at the same time doing their best to ignore discrimination from society. I have seen that both muslims and latinos such as myself are always being discriminated by those who think that they are better than us.…

Shannahan (2009) elaborates on the issues of same sex marriage among Muslim lesbian women and the double standards of men in Islam. She starts off by comparing rape of America women to Muslim women in terms of being consent to their sexualities. Although each woman has the right to say yes or no, laws has been used to disproportionally neglect their rights while protecting the negative characteristic of sexual autonomy. Shannahan (2009) believed that the reason of preventing Muslim lesbian women from the oppression of their men in the world of sexual choice is solemnly done to strip away any power of sexual rights they may hold by passing their bodies and rights into the hands of the men. Throughout her study, she claims that gender equality intersects with the human rights of both men and women at the discussion issue of sexual rights…

Gunshots woke me up. What seemed to be an enlightening day, turned out quite the opposite. Just the day before, our burglar alarm's siren echoed throughout the house at 4 a.m. My dad rushed downstairs to determine if our house had been broken into; the back door was slightly open, but nobody else was in the house. Surprisingly, on the next day, my neighbor's house had been hit with a multitude of bullets around midnight.…

Background: After the 1979 revolution, women’s sport was completely neglected for almost one decade. An ideal Iranian woman was portrayed as a supporting mother, wife, or sister of war veterans. It was just after the end of Iran-Iraq war when women’s sport attracted some attention, particularly as a space where an image of an active but modest women could be portrayed as a role model for and representative of women in Islamic Iran. Faezeh Rafsenjani, daughter of Akbar Rafsenjani, then the president of Iran, founded the Women’s Islamic Games- a multi-sport competition event in which women athletes from Islamic countries (later non-Islamic countries were added) could participate. As no men or cameras were allowed to enter the competition area,…

Born and raised in Iran to Afghan parents, who had immigrated to Iran at the height of Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, I was awarded a first-person view of injustice and corruption. As Afghan refugees, we were not afforded a fraction of the rights and privileges given to Iranian citizens. Even education, a fundamental human right, was inaccessible to us. It was such maltreatments that incited my mother's visit to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 2002. After speaking to my mother, the representative decided that we met the strict requirements for resettling in Canada.…
