Musicians and athletes share common threads. Athletes and musicians have their differences but the two are more similar than you would think. Although athletes and musicians differ on the way they perform and their performances, they both practice copious amounts, entertain audiences, and use teamwork to help the overall quality of their performance.
Musicians and athletes have to practice copious amounts in order to perform well. Musicians must practice every day in order to get better and improve their overall performance. They must practice the same songs over and over to make them sound as beautiful as they do. Practicing the music is not always easy, in fact, some pieces can be very challenging whether it be because of an awkward fingering, a difficult tempo or it stretches your range. “Rehearsing for countless hours is not something one just does; there has to be a type of person who will do this thing” (McKagen). Athletes must practice every day in order to get better and improve the overall performance just like musicians. Athletes push themselves to play better by practicing large amounts.

When in an ensemble, musicians use one another to create a sense of balance and unity. Teamwork is key to creating a successful performance from an ensemble. According to Duff McKagen “great athletes and successful musicians have a very strong tendency to be Type A people: real go-getters who don't have to be told or forced to practice or perform at the highest level of human endurance and aggression” (Athletes, Musicians Share Common Rage).
