In my opinion, musical roles in an ensemble are like roles in a basketball team. In an ensemble, there might be nine brass musicians, two organists, a drummer, and a bassist along with various bells, electronics and a conductor. On the other hand, in a basketball team there are point guards, shooting guards, small forwards, power forwards, centers, assistant coach and a head coach. It seems there are hierarchical roles in an ensemble and a basketball team, for example, the head coach and the conductor has more power than the others. Although the head coach and the conductor seem to be more important, without players there will be no concert or game. Therefore every the role in the ensemble are as important as another.
