Music Therapy For Children with Special Needs Sarah is a sixteen year old girl who was born with autism. She is always very loud and yelling. She never listens to what her parents tell her to do. Her parents went to therapists and tried everything they could to to try to make her behave better. One therapist told them about a type of therapy called music therapy. They decided that they would try it out and they started to see a real change in Sarah’s behavior. There was almost no more of her yelling and being loud. When her parents told her to do something she would actually listen. The vibrations, harmonies and rhythms used in music therapy affect the body’s development. Music therapy should be used on children who have special needs. The opponents of music therapy might say that, music therapy does not improve communication skills in children with special needs. Ashley Isaacson is trying to inform her readers about how people with autism respond to music therapy. Isaacson is listing the many goal that were set during the music therapy sessions. Some of the goal that are set in the therapy sessions are social relationships and communication. Therapists had many goals set for their patients to reach (Isaacson). Ronna Kaplan wrote an article on how music therapy helped people with autism. In the article, the American Music Therapy Association wrote about how music therapy helps children with autism. Music therapy makes the “quality of life” involving relationships between the the therapist and the child with autism more visible.
